Would You Spend Five Months With Penguins And No Wifi Or Running Water?

Working in Antarctica is a wildlife enthusiast’s dream, however seeing the reality of the climate disaster up close will be brutal. Antarctica holds an almost mythical appeal. Detached from the rest of the world, its beauty is unique. It is a continent that has never seen a war, and where testing military capabilities is strictly forbidden. It is, as the Antarctic Treaty reminds us, “a natural reserve devoted to peace and science”. What do you think LiveTribers? Would you spend five months with penguins and no Wifi or running water?

The cold would be a slight challenge but the opportunity to spend time endlessly in nature away from people, covid and the constant tragedy that is the world news. It's like lockdown but way better. For those of you puzzled by my response I'm an introvert. The uncomfortability that extroverts felt during the lockdowns unable to meet your basic human needs for connection is the same uncomfortable feeling introverts get most days being forced to constantly socially interact and be surrounded by others on every 'special occasion'. In small doses it's fine but omg society give us a break - we're happy being alone, need it for sanity and are usually more in tune with the reality of society since we spend time observing it without the bias of interaction. Back to the post though - sounds like an amazing opportunity :)

No not for me. I like the idea of the peace and natural beauty and no war but too isolated.

I would be happy to spend 5 months with the penguins. I wouldn't mind if I didn't have the internet. It would be very hard to not have running hot water, especially as it is so cold there.

I have family who regularly go to Antarctica for research. Through their experiences I have learnt a lot about what the place is like, the nations that are there and the type of research that takes place. I would love to go there - to have the opportunity to see the landscape, to take part if the significant research projects, to cooperate across countries and to experience the way the time spent there builds resilience

I don't like the cold at all so although Antarctica would be amazing to experience and I'm ok with the no running water or wifi I could stand the cold!

If I want to see penguins I'll go to Phillip Island (Vic) Running water, meh, lived in the bush for 5 years, no big deal. WiFi is so patchy here it might as well be non-existant. Antarctican holds no appeal, with lots of snow and ice and long cold nights. I can get that by going to Tasmania.

Unfortunately, I am too old now and I just hate being cold. Don't mind being on my own or without wi-fi - it is just the cold that bothers me.

No, I’m honestly too much of a princess and need my creature comforts. I do love nature and adventure, but I’d say I’d last 1 week max lol

I'd love to say that I'd jump at the chance, but I'm not sure I could handle the cold. If there was a way of coming home if I reacted badly, I'd definitely give it a try.

Could go without WiFi - but not running water & to be in that cold environment is definitely a no-no for me! Please leave what is left of the natural world to the creatures that survive there for a purpose

No, I definitely would not spend 5 months in cold weather freezing cold that is not exactly suitable for humans and it should be left alone. Every time man enters for science, damage is done and a fine foot print remaining left behind. Due to it not being habitatable for humans I don't believe scientists need to do any research and just leave the habitat alone free for animals to survive. Destroying their habitat, then man moves on.

I would jump at this opportunity but feel I am a bit old even though I am a young and a fit 54 year old......I hated the cold also but would invest in several full sets of thermal underwear......with change of life I'm a little hot and have been for years so prefer cold nowadays with hormones etc.....I just feel life is all about adventures and opportunity.....and should be grabbed with both hands if this was ever offered....It's a completely different world.......

I don 't give 2 hoots for WiFi but I wouldn't spend 5 months with no running water, or Penguins and I certainly wouldn't spend 5 months in Antartica because even when it's warm it's cold and I don't like cold.
