Why Has The Legalise Cannabis Party Introduced Personal Use Bills In NSW, Victoria And Western Australia?

The Legalise Cannabis party has recently introduced bills to legalise marijuana for personal use in parliaments in Victoria, New South Wales, and Western Australia. It is the first time the same bill has been tabled in three states on the same day. The bills have been introduced to the states' upper houses and will need support from major parties to become law. It will not allow people under 18 to access cannabis or permit driving while impaired by the drug. New South Wales upper house MP Jeremy Buckingham said the reform would allow people over the age of 18 to grow up to six cannabis plants in their households. What do you think LiveTribers? Why has the Legalise Cannabis party introduced personal use bills in NSW, Victoria and Western Australia?

It's definitely wrong. We don't need more junkies in society. These sorts of issues unfortunately win votes.

That is what their party is aiming for. Their media advisor in Victoria is Fiona Patten, who used to be with the Reason Party. This party has also approved lowering the criminal age in Victoria.

That's absolutely crazy - there's no way you should legalise Maijuana for personal use in parliaments - there's a good portion of MPs who are half asleep there already - what will happen to the restaurants and cafes in the parliament buildings - they'll be run off their feet!

OFFS !!! Just Legalize it and be done iwth all the crap that is spread around about it!! IN the USA, many states have legalized it, and their are shops that you can go into and legally purchase weed and the Govt get its tax share from that also. Why is it that pot is legal in the ACT, and not in other states?? Come on pollies, legalize it and tax it ...you know you want the taxes...grrr.

It in no more dangerous than alcohol and tobacco. Medical marijuana IS hard to get especially if you are a pensioner and really need it, It is expensive too.

Should be legalised in the right ways, medical or personal choice, monitored so that people aren't subjected to laced or home grown strands that can cause further mental health issues. Being cheaper and available to those who use it will benefit there quality of living and openness about their use to their medical practitioners.

Well it is in their name. It’s the name of their party so of course they would introduce this bill what else have they got? But everyone else needs to say no

I have heard that it can trigger schizophrenia in certain people who are not aware of this trigger as it is an inherited gene and there is no going back from that. But I do feel different about medical marijuana as it is does not have the same properties.

For a start, marijuana is an illicit drug, How a political party can be formed to advocate its use is beyond me.

I think this is a very irresponsible measure, It will be hard to administer and it has the potential to cause irreparable harm to many people. People advocating for this measure on health reasons are misleading the public - medical cannabis that is controlled, is now widely available for this purpose. It would be quite impossible for law enforcement to monitor how many plants household are growing. What criterion would law Enforcment use to ascertain if a person was impaired while driving? If it through the normal drug testing procedures, then any amount of cannabis found in their system would still render them breaking the law as it is now. Saying that people under the age of 18 would not be allowed to access cannabis is also fraught with danger - If the parents are growing it at home for their own use, then they obviously believe it is acceptable so there is an inherent danger that these people would also allow their under 18 children to use it with their permission. And the danger is increased when these parents are stoned, and their decision making is impaired. Terrible idea

If it frees up time and resources in the legal and justice systems, by reducing efforts to deal with personal use of cannabis, it could have flow-on benefits to dealing with other societal issues. So although I don't think smoking cannabis is healthy for most people, it seems like a sensible move that will be beneficial overall.

Not when they drive under the influence or when it triggers episodes in a lot of users that can be violent and have also long term health issues. It tends to make people vague and lazy. Legalised medical cannabis is great as they have taken out the hallucinogenic part of it and it is beneficial in many areas.

Medical marijuana is already legalised and does benefit many Rhonda. Other marijuana is dangerous and can cause serious harm, e.g. schizophrenia, so should never be legalised. Perhaps you should look into the matter a bit more.

Yes needs to be legal, it is the least harmful of all drugs as long as it is grown outdoors without chemicals. Hydroponics can be too strong too. Most people who smoke or eat it do so in moderation and if hey have too much just sleep. There has never been one person who has died from it or caused anyone else do die. Compare that to alcohol and see what damage that does to society. Many people will stop drinking alcohol and take cannabis perferably without tobacco which is the harmful part.

It's ridiculous it hasn't been done already. In Qld if you go to court and it is mentioned they say that it is a dangerous drug, what bollocks, dangerous to the cupboard that might run out of snacks! My husband has a script for it, it is costing us over $500 a month to get it legally, the cost is ridiculous, atleast if he can grow his own we can reduce the cost of it. It'd cost less than $10 a script to get heavy drugs for his pain but long term they just do more damage.

I think drink driving is horrendous but smoking does not cause accidents when driving. Pot heads do though but with all the drugs out there being used now I think many people are on something when driving. Pot, drugs, drink- all dangerous

Access to medical cannabis is not difficult…if people want to use cannabis they will get it one way or another…will just sit along side being legal to smoke …drink alcohol and be another regulated taxed item for people to indulge in …

It is long overdue for the decriminalisation of cannabis. There are many treatments that cannabis can be used to help treat medical conditions. The government is missing out on the tax that can help fund other parts of the government.

I don't think that cannabis is any more dangerous when driving than alcohol is. Ands it's no more dangerous to your health than smoking cigarettes. So, if alcohol and cigarettes are legal drugs, then so should cannabis be. And allowing up to 6 plants in households is quite fair.

All drugs, except those as mind altering as Heroin should be legalised, and penalties only imposed on people who are out and about and affected badly by them. Then we could do away with having all sorts of police etc trying to find out where the illegal drugs were coming from and finding the criminals profiting of other peoples misery.Alcohol and Cigarettes are as bad for us as many drugs.

Some years ago, when I was working at a psychiatric hospital, a nurse told me that marijuana is a major trigger for mental illnesses such as schizophrenia. I know several people suffering, including a close family member, after using drugs. There is no going back after the illnesses develop, treatment can only do so much. I think they should be illegal except for medical purposes.

I so agree with you Sandra. I have a relative whose brain is virtually destroyed from using marijuana. He can no longer work or live a normal life. It is unfortunate that so many people think it is harmless.

the government should copy Switzerland and legalise all drugs and the tax will be used to rehabilitate. people who use drugs get bored when they dont have to run around and deal with shadey people, suddenly they have the mind to do something else with their life. hopefully, a younger leader will step up and lead a more wise government

This bill is a way to get around the existing laws. Drug affected drivers cause accidents as much if not more than drink affected drivers. Either drugs are safe or not, there is no grey area.
