Why Do Portraits Still Matter In An Era Of Selfies?

One of UK’s best known portrait painters argues that as an art form, portraits are important as ever in an era where tens of millions of selfies are captured every day. He is best known for his portraits of figures from the world of entertainment, royalty, politics, and activism, among them Sir David Attenborough, Idris Elba, Nicole Kidman, Sienna Miller and many others. He says a painted portrait can encapsulate more aspects of a sitter's personality than a regular photograph. A photo is a frozen moment. What you get when you're painting a portrait is a bit of time elapsing. When you're painting a picture, you're working on it one part at a different time, than another. So instead of a static image, you've got lots of different moments captured. What are your thoughts LiveTribers? Why do portraits still matter in an era of selfies?

Portraits are not only beautiful but they can capture the essence of the subject in a way that selfies can't.

As someone who couldn't draw to save herself, I am in awe of portrait painters who are able to capture not only an image of the subject but a personality as well. Selfies and photographs have their place but can never replace the work of an artist.

some portraits, thinking of annie liebowitz's work, bring out aspects of a persons character or experiences that a simple selfie wouldn't capture, it can be in the framing, prop and background choice and lighting

There are still useful scenarios where a portrait is more important and valuable. So it holds value and is still relevant, just not as common.

A portrait is real art. Anyone can do a selfie, filters and photoshop don’t make it hard

Portraits are looked at more often. People take hundreds (or thousands) of selfies and never look at them again.

A selfie is just a photo but a painting is a work of art and there is a big difference.

Well, portraits serve as historical records and cultural artifacts, documenting individuals who have made significant contributions to society.

I'll take a portrait any day over a selfie. We have some beautiful portraits of various arts of the family. They are here forever and will be handed on.

A portrait always looks more real than a selfie which always looks posed and fake to me. I appreciate the amount of work that goes into a portrait created over sometimes, long periods, whereas even a trained monkey can take a selfie in a few seconds.

Yes, and they are more interesting than silly selfies. A good artist can paint your real features. With selfies they can be dam photoshopped or altered. Before cameras people had portraits done. It was mostly the rich or famous of those times that had them done. I've always appreciated a good portrait. Such class! However, we should have more portraits done of ordinary people and not just those who are rich and famous. Not all of those people today interest me. The UK Queen had hers done numerous times. But it seems the established artists would mostly prefer famous people. I guess that's where most of their income lies.

Not everyone does selfies. A portrait is more permanent. People hang onto them for many generations.
