Why Are Virtual Production Studios Replacing Green Screens As World’s Largest Opens In Melbourne?

Virtual production brings the graphics rendering power of computer games to the production stage of filmmaking. A new kind of film studio was unveiled in Melbourne recently which is called a virtual production stage. It’s a type of facility that has been dubbed the next big thing in film and TV. The new one at Docklands is the largest in the world. Imagine a wall of LED screens three storeys high, as long as a soccer field. This bank of screens is connected to powerful computers driven by gaming software, able to create high-resolution animated backdrops that respond to the perspective of the camera. What are your thoughts LiveTribers? Why are virtual production studios replacing green screens as world’s largest opens in Melbourne?

The Mandalorian uses this and it looks more realistic, moves better and less of a line around the actors. They can also act and respond better when they see their surroundings, as opposed to a background that is added in post production.

Progress, Baby!! So much more versatile than the old green screens. have you noticed how many people in films and on screen are wearing green? heaps, because they can, you'll notice now.....

It's a shame because there is something special about non-CGI movies but it is probably more cost efficient and quicker to release movies.

Sounds like an even better way of never having to go on a site set again. Must save money in the long run, but it's a pity for those of us who like to see the real thing not just a backdrop.

Another way to save money. Please don’t subscribe to film piracy. This is the result of criminal behaviour. Cheap nasty fake films.

If the background scene is produced on set that is one step less in production. Just another step away from a real scene weather we like it or not.

I imagine it would make CGI film making a lot easier since the actors will be able to actually see what's on these screens and react to a real image rather than an imaginary one.

Sounds very interesting, have we not seen videos of huge animated animals on the side of a building using lights. One was a tiger and it looked so real people were ducking for cover as it pounced. It sounds cool and the imagination goes a little crazy when thinking about the possibilities.

These screens would probably save time. There would be less post-production required to change the green screen backgrounds into "real" backgrounds.

It is going to bring new experiences when we watch movies and other programs. But I assume it is a long way to go until it can be widely spread since it is expensive and new technology would replace it quickly.

Green screens were the industry benchmark for realist backdrops for actors to play against. Virtual production with provide even better realism, less need to wear specific colours that don't clash with a green - or blue - screen and greater computer generated scenarios.

Using this Technology in film making means fewer buliding materials required for constucting sets along with the accociated staff wages. Also disruptions to traffic flow & local neighbourhoods for real life situations wouldn't be impacted.

Today, with the advancement of real-time technology, a new option has emerged: virtual production LED walls. LED walls offer some unique benefits over traditional green screens. However, green screens still have a place in the industry.
