Why Are Governments And Institutions Around The World Banning TikTok From Officials’ Phones And Devices?

The Netherlands and Norway have joined the list of countries banning the video-sharing app, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, from government-issued devices. Despite TikTok's insistence it is independently run and shares no users' data with the Chinese government, France has become the latest country to restrict officials' access to it. But at the same time, it has also become the first country to do the same for all "recreational" apps including: Netflix, Instagram, Candy Crush and Twitter. What are your thoughts LiveTribers? Why are governments and institutions around the world banning TikTok from officials’ phones and devices?

Because social media is dangerous for children, it affects their attention span. They rely on quick dopamine hits now because they are use to instant gratification. I hope we can ban snap chat, Instagram, facebook as well because not all kids and adults have the ability to use these reasonably within balance.

My family and I think this is a wise policy for all democratic governments around the world. Their taxpayer-funded hardware and communication devices shouldn’t have any employee’s personal and/or “hobby” software and apps because they should just be used for work purposes! It isn’t just because TikTok is owned by a Chinese company but the fact that it, and other popular apps, are open to hacking and exploitation worldwide.

Because Tic Tok cannot be regulated by free democratic countries and personnel data can be utilised by China making this app an absolute risk to national security

Exactly like what some have said, Chinese government could force a Chinese owned company to hand over its data, despite having laws in place by another country to prevent the private data from being handed over.

TikTok is getting bigger and bigger especially with the younger generation. The problem is the amount of data collected they collect including private data and Chinese laws could force a Chinese owned company to hand over its data, despite having laws in place by another country to prevent the private data from being handed over.

It’s easier and easier these days to gain data, hack into peoples person information. Banning these apps on officials phones isn’t any different to apps already banned.

M.P. there seems to be politics and other things , and fear of foreign infiltration and massive data collection that can be used by the controlling powers of government ruling over the media company

Questionable privacy, data is stored in China, poor and unmoderated content. It is clear why the app should be banned, especially in the workplace

Seeing that people get so caught up in it and kids and teenagers are dying from silly challenges and the privacy concerns yes, it should be banned

They must be having enough reason in terms of China's spying to do so. Having said that....TikTok is just rubbish and is destroying today's generation! The younger generation is just getting dumber and dumber.

It should be due to the spyware hidden in its codes. I think it is also a good thing for young kids cause too many of them are addictive in TikTok.

I don't see a problem with it being banned from Government issued devices. If those people want to use TikTok they can still do use it on their own private devices at home.

Even though I have come across very useful content on tik tok, there are so much junk on there. Wouldn't mind it being banned here in Aus as it consumes so much time and ruins one's attention span.

Hell, if I was growing up today, I can definitely tell you that I wouldn't survive. I mean it was enough to be bullied at school everyday but at least when the school day was done, that was it. Nowadays, marginalized, innocent kids are subjected to this all day everyday. All social media should be banned. We survived using the conventional modes of communication and all social media does is make you feel inadequate. Then there is the spying in every sense of the word. Political or not political. Totally sinister.

Sadly the possibilities for misuse of social media are endless and very scary. It's bad enough the cyber bullying and gossip-mongering by 'ordinary' people and creates too many opportunities for corrupt officials and scammers. No matter what company or from which country a social media platform comes from, who knows who is hacking into information?

I don't use tiktok either. It is being banned because it records your videos and China is a Communist country. It could be used by China to spy on people.

Some would suggest that any and all of the so called SocialMedia platforms require more than is necessary user information. Any of those platforms headquartered and or owned by a non democratic totalitarian regime would always be a security risk to users. With rapidly emerging AI technology this risk will worsen and even so called Western Democracies will not be able to resist the lure of Orwellian Control. I don't use Social Media it's a time waster and gossip magnet!!
