Should We Worry About Eating Too Many Takeaways?

We all know that takeaway food tends to be full of salt, sugar, and additives, but when does an occasional treat become an unhealthy habit? We’ve all been there. It has been a long day, there is nothing in the fridge, cooking seems arduous, and the solution is obvious: takeaway. It’s easy for takeaways to drift from once-in-a-while treat to a twice-weekly emotional crutch. At some point, you wonder, is it doing you any harm? Takeaway food tends to be high in fat and salt which are ingredients that are relatively cheap and taste good, making you more likely to reorder. And it’s much easier to overeat a highly processed pizza containing refined carbs, fat, and salt, compared with a plate of vegetables or salad. What do you think LiveTribers? Should we worry about eating too many takeaways?

Fast food is addictive, so the ease makes it too easy to over indulge

I enjoy takeaway but for a quick and easy meal when away when travelling back from the city, or for an occasional meal for a treat. I think everything is OK in moderation.

I think it is useful when travelling or for a special occasion, we are eating it less and less now as it costs so much, why spend money on something that is not even good for you.

We all know that takeaway food is unhealthy, however there is a place for takeaway food, but only in moderation, not as a full meal service. Takeaway is popular as it is usually quick, not cheap. However it is usually cheaper than healthy choices.

Depends on what food and beverage is being ordered or taken away as left over. I don't worry it too much for myself because I don't eat too much unhealthy food anyway. No matter what I take away, I just stick to my normal eating habbit-eat as healthily as much as I can.

I think of the old rule is still relevant today. You should have a little of everything and never too much of anything. Take away is fine, sometimes, but most take away food doesn't hold much nutritional value.

Balance and moderation is definitely key but in this day and age, who can afford takeaways often. It’s crazy expensive. You could make a lot more food at home then what you get from takeaway food.

I think this problem is being driven by modern lifestyle - we work a lot longer and by the time we get back we're already time poor. It would be interesting to see what the economic impact is from eating too many takeaways and having larger workforce participation and productivity.

I definitely avoid takeaways as much as possible. Even if we don't have time to cook I will settle for something healthy and easy to put together. One of my favourite quick meals is cutting up a raw carrot and a tomato and other vegetables or fruit in my fridge. The raw carrot makes it very filling. The calories are very low as well compared to takeaways.

Yeas we should. We also wrongly think that creating a meal takes too long. Some healthy options take only 15 minutes. When you think how long it takes to pick up a takeway , or decide on what to order, then wait for delivery.....15 minutes is FASTER!

Definitely! Too many take away from the treat value and they become commonplace. It makes me wonder when so many are complaining about the cost of living why we have long lines at takeaway outlets, often well out onto the road. You can save a lot making your own and keeping the takeaway as a treat.

Takeaways are rarely a healthy option - sugar, fat, salt, etc - and too expensive compared with what you can buy as 'real food'. Maybe we all need to up our cooking skills and make use of freezer space too.

If u care abt your health u should be worried and limit ur takeaways. I don't rly care abt my health tho but I care abt how I look so I avoid eating them anyways so I don't get fat. If I didn't get fat and takeaways were not expensive I'd probably always eat takeaways.

Moderation is the answer. I loathe cooking, but still cook meat and veggies or fish around 6 days a week. My husband and I enjoy an occasional trip to McDonalds. It is cheap, delicious and you can sit down and be waited on. The staff are lovely. I don't find eating a small roll, grilled beef, cheese and gherkin unhealthy. We usually only go for the Cheeseburgers, not the huge Big Macs etc. and don't have dessert. At our age, you need some treats. We get plenty of exercise walking there and back anyway which helps.

I never buy takeaway. Firstly it is too expensive and I can always cook up a quick meal. I often do bulk meals and freeze them such as Lasagne and therefore it is not hard to just defrost it by taking it out in the morning so when arriving home it takes a few minutes in the microwave. Add a salad and one is done. Just as quick as ordering something, cheaper and healthier. However, if you are into takeaways then in moderation. 2 a week is not moderation.

Like most things, there's nothing wrong with consuming them in moderation. I have takeaways about once a month but looking at some obese parents and their children who frequent the popular takeaway eateries you don't need an expert to tell you how unhealthy these food products are.
