Should Federal Labor MP’s Alicia Payne and Luke Gosling introduce legislation to remove euthanasia ban in Northern Territory and ACT?

A bill to overturn a 25-year old bank on the ACT and Northern Territory legislating voluntary assisted dying could be brought before federal parliament within weeks. Labor backbenchers Alicia Payne from Canberra and Luke Gosling from Darwin plan to table legislation at the next parliamentary sitting to remove the Commonwealth veto. However, the Albanese government will allow Labor parliamentarians a conscience vote rather than direct the to support the bill. What are your thoughts LiveTribers? Should Federal MP’s Alicia Payne and Luke Gosling introduce legislation to remove euthanasia ban in Northern Territory and ACT?

Living in pain is hard, and you cannot understand it until you walk those shoes. It is not about promoting euthanasia, is about giving the freedom to do it if that is your preference.

Yes please. We euthanise our pets to put them out of their misery when they are close to death, why do we keep ill and infirm people alive with no quality of life either by feeding them intravenously or letting them starve to death in their last few days because they cannot be euthanised.

Unfortunately euthanasia can be applied to people who don't want it. I have had a bad experience at a hospital i won't name where i had a major heart attack and my heart stopped. They initially chose not to revive me because i said i didn't think I needed to go to intensive care as I trusted the cardiac ward nurses to treat me. I had the heart attack according to my heart surgeon because they flooded my heart with fluid giving me a blood transfusion in one arm and an iron infusion in the other. They rang my son who said revive her immediately my mother has never signed a form asking not to be revived! He said some other things ss well which I won't repeat. I would now be dead had he not been able to answer his phone!

I am with you Windog. Life is very special until the time comes that you are suffering so much with Chronic Paid that you cannot bear it anymore. I live with such pain everyday and I am on massive does of Fentanyl and Effexor part from other painkillers. These medications themselves do not allow you to live a normal life and constantly I am told be specialist Doctors to get off these medications. If I was forced to get off these medications I would suffer severely and would only have one option, and that is not with the help of the Medical Profession. I know I would like someone to help me relieve the pain forever. I am sorry to upset anybody as I don't mean to.

The Bill should definitely be introduced, and hopefully will be passed. It is absurd that people should be artificially kept alive against their will, suffering from excruciating pain, at great expense, when they should have the right to decide to end the suffering and die a dignified, painless death.

Most definitely as then it becomes a personal choice. No-one will be forced to succumb to euthanasia against their will. If the bill is overturned then the individual is given the choice as opposed to current legislation where there is no choice. People against overturning do not have to choose. They should not, by default, be forcing others to accept their choice. As it has been stated previously, "we are not living longer, we are dying longer".

I thoroughly agree with Alicia Payne and LUke Gosling. A person with a terminal illness should have the right to die with dignity on Thier own terms. My uncle died a painful death from cancer of the throat. They kept him alive in extreme pain which I see as being cruel and inhuman. Most definitely lift the bans!!!!

This is always going to be a difficult issue. I know my feelings have changed over the years and it is very hard for anyone not directly affected at the moment to really know how they would feel if faced with the situation personally or with the ill health of a loved one. I would hate to watch a loved one in pain with no hope of recovery but would also hate to have to make a decision about euthanasia.

If it is morally and medically justify, why only in NT and ACT? If it is not seen as morally and medically justify, it shouldn't be approved anywhere. The point is-who is/are in a role to play god's roles to determine a person's life and death? This is not just a legislative matter, it is a worldview matter. It affects personally. Despite the official 'spoke out' 'allowed' euthanasia, the hospitals have long invented something de facto in practice-"medical assisted dignified death" and 'choice of not to be treated'.

It should be the right of anyone to seek euthanasia if their quality of life is suffering due to disease or pain and there is no hope of remission. Typically politicians have to stick their noses into everything to gain votes or big-note themselves. This should be between the patient and their health practitioner only. Keep politics out of it.

Personal preferences and opinions should not be taken into account. We have the right to vote for who we want in elections, we have the right to choose our religious beliefs and we do mainly have freedom of choice in so many matters so if a person's health is at a level where they believe their quality of life is unbearable, with the right medical assistance assisted dying should be the choice of the individual. No politician or political or religious group should hold the power to cause further suffering to a person and their families. We are required by law to treat animals to prevent their suffering, so why can't humans get the same treatment?
