Does Ketamine Plus Therapy Treat Alcoholism?

Overcoming alcoholism is notoriously difficult, but researchers are hoping a new treatment combination might help: ketamine and psychological therapy. The use of psychedelics alongside therapy is a booming area of research, with ketamine, MDMA and psilocybin – the active ingredient of magic mushrooms – among the drugs that are being studied to tackle mental health problems ranging from depression to PTSD. Now researchers are set to launch a phase 3 trial, the largest of its kind, to explore the use of ketamine in treating severe alcohol use disorder. What are your thoughts LiveTribers? Does Ketamine Plus Therapy treat alcoholism?

I can't see why anyone would use 1 drug to combat another anyone who has an addiction knows that when you stop or slow down 1 addiction it's usually substituted for another.

Isn't ketamine highly addictive? Why would you swap one addiction to another? This just does not make sense to me.

To replace on drug for another does never work as the person would be come addicted to the new drug with could be worst then the first drug. People need to make up their mind if they want to stop an addiction. Even all the research what has done so far suggesting if people not receptive to drop an addiction it will never work. This is just a money spinning idea using one drug to replace another drug.

Just seems like another fad, nothing conclusive or proven yet. I will mostly last given time and fade away

Some researchers claim that Ketamine can help, however there is little empirical evidence on the effectiveness of psychological therapy provided in conjunction with ketamine treatment.

Treating a drug or alcohol addiction with another drug will never cure. You will only become addicted or reliant on something else. There is only one way is to detox, clear your system out and stop the cravings. Eating nutritious food, fresh fruit and veggies, lots of green smoothies etc. Just read about it the The Brain Saver book by Anthony William. He covers a lot of chronic illness and addiction problems.

Just another fad based thought bubble. Ketamine is a dissociative anaesthetic chemical that when misused and misunderstood can be deadly! If it indeed can help chronic alcoholics then bring it on. But there is rarely a silver bullet in dtug addictions..... behaviour modifications and drug therapy may assist.......but don't hold your breath. Addictive personalities are difficult to treat and continue successful behaviours. Good luck with the Ketamine either way!!!

While it might help one with overcoming alcohol addiction, I suppose this therapy would just replace it with another.

Some of the current research is very exciting. Particularly with regard to Depression. Much more humane than some other treatments for example ect IMO

Im skeptical that whilst it might treat one thing it will open the door to other health dependency issues. Psychological treatment would need to be paired as mandatory woth substance treatment. Look at the problems caused by other prescribed medications im terms of substance abuse. Personally i dont think adding more toxins to the body is solely a good fix...

I feel this could lead to solving one addiction and replacing it with another. Unsure about this practice

It would have to be widely and strictly tested for it be accepted. I think now I would say no because it hasn't been tested, investigated and researched in detail.

I don't drink alcohol or have mental issues but anything that can help people who do would be wonderful.
