Can Brown Noise Really Help You Concentrate?

Some people use it to improve their focus while others use it to drop off to sleep. Some say they listen to it day and night. But what is brown noise? And does it work? The “brown” in brown noise is not a colour, but a reference to sound that mimics Brownian motion, the movement pollen makes in water, identified by the botanist Robert Brown in 1827. In essence, brown noise is the familiar, staticky sound of white noise (that is, all the audible frequencies simultaneously) but with the low frequency notes augmented and the less pleasant high frequency notes turned down, counteracting the human ear’s natural tendency to hear higher frequencies louder. What are your thoughts LiveTribers? Can brown noise really help you concentrate?

Brown noise is made (filtered) from a linear spectrum of white noise. A forced kind of pink noise, just even more low-frequency, and less high-frequency content. This kind of noise is rather comfortable (closer to the natural noise) if used at low levels.

I've never heard of "Brown Noise". We use a white noise machine to help my husband sleep as he's a shift worker. Definitely something new to think about.

For me personally brown noise does not help me concentrate on my task at hand as I have a leaky roof when it rains. Having said that, I normally sleep much longer through the rain for some reason. Not sure why that is the case.

I had a hard time differentiating between White, Brown and Pink Noises. The three help me sleep better but never tried it with reading or focusing on work.

It's a matter of personal preference, but not to my taste

I haven't really considered it. I prefer to listen to gentle piano music.

It certainly helps me to listen to loud music to keep motivated when I'm doing housework

I'm intrigued by the concept, so checked it out online and found this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LY0kLycju-I. I'm not sure if it is for me as it sounds similar to a airconditioner, wind, or a server room next door in an office. I can see how it might work for others, but personally I was happier when I turned off the sound and heard nothing.

Is this based on South Park and the infamous Brown Note episode. It is possibly dangerous

I had been told that white noise would alleviate tinnitus - in my case however, I haven't found that to be true and honestly haven't found anything to alleviate this tinnitus noise. That would be helpful for concentration.

In essence Brown Noise is the sound of radio static as in between intelligible channels. Some find it sleep supporting others may not. Bit like going to sleep in front of the telly and once transmission ceases the static sound seems to support sleep. If white or brown noise helps your insomnia .....lucky you. Considering lack of sleep is one of the largest causes of stress treated psych problems in the Western World!
