Would You Travel Australia By Train?

Travelling Australia by train gives you a front-row seat to Australia’s ever-changing landscapes, from desert plains to misty mountains. The Indian Pacific (named for the oceans east and west of the continent) is a four-day journey which starts in Sydney before crossing the Blue Mountains. On board, you can experience hearty breakfasts, two-course lunches, and three course dinners, and can sip on barista-made coffee, beer, or wine, included in the fare. What do you think LiveTribers? Would you travel Australia by train?

Train travel has its plusses as opposed to air travel. In most cases you arrive in the city centre rather than at an airport miles from anywhere, great for tourists. There are no delays for bad weather. Unfortunately Australia's rail network is not up to having the Very Fast Trains that operate in Europe. Probably a lot of work needs to be done by governments state and federal to improve the railways. The airlines are a powerful lobby group and would seek to thwart railway development.

My husband and I did the Ghan a couple of years ago and loved every minute of it. We will one day do the Indian Pacific. Great way to see Australia and the people you meet along the way.

Depends if you can get off the train for extended periods of time and whether the cost is reasonable. The trains in Europe is a great way of travelling economically and seeing the different landscapes so why can't Australia do the same?

I will travel by train but not a consecutive 4 days train trip because I don't like to be confined in a closed door environment since covid. The Indian Pacific train trip is too expensive and not really justified for the cost. I had better train trip before-the Rocky Mountaineer in Canada. However, I will still travel by train within the state I live for up to 4 hours as that won't be too expensive and exhaustive. It may be cheaper to fly.

My husband and I would love to travel on the Indian Pacific and the Ghan if it wasn’t so expensive. Apart from the expense, we would love to travel around Australia on the train, there is so much to experience when travelling on land.

it's the kind of thing that sounds great but has more than meets the eye to the trip. kind of like going on the spirit of tasmania etc. you still need to travel to their departure station and pack and carry bags and everything. it sounds great but i'm not sure i would do it just because of the forward planning and cost involved. maybe one day!

I have always wanted to travel on the Indian Pacific since my nanna did the trip to Adelaide back in the late 70's. I'd love to be waited on for a change and relax instead of running around after everyone else. The idea of looking out the window and watching the country roll by appeals to me immensely, it's just the price of the trip that has put me off. Maybe one day, when I win Lotto. LOL

One disadvantage I found with train travel was the rumbling of the wheels on the track kept me awake. It is heaps more expensive to go to Perth by train than it is to fly - or it used to be. Some trains pull into stations overnight. The staff re-stock with necessities, thoroughly clean the train and have a restful sleep if they worked overnight or longer shifts. There is usually optional day trips during the day when the train is stopped near one.

It's very expensive in Australia plus they do a lot of the travel at night so you miss a lot of the scenery albeit a lot of it is boring.

Yes, it is something I would like to do as long as we have a sleeping cabin. We travelled by train in Europe and it was mostly a great and relaxing way to see the sights. I have travelled on the Overland from Melbourne to Adelaide a long time ago and back. One of these trips wasn't great due to an unhappy child being near us and we hadn't booked a bed. Definitely make sure you have a sleeping cabin for a long overnight train trip in Australia and Europe. We travelled from Rome to Vienna overnight and it was terrible. We had to stand most of the night and there was no cafeteria available.

Yes, yes, yes! I've loved train travel since I was a child, when I many of the country trains were still steam trains. I love the movement, the sounds, the smells, the views, the onboard food and drinks. I've travelled on the old Pullman trains that did the Sydney - Melbourne route, and had individual sleeping cabins, curving passageways, a dining room with real tablecloths and flowers in a vase. I shouted my nieces to this trip and they didn't want to get off the train. I've done most of the long distance trips available in Australia, as well as those in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Africa. I take a couple of good books, some sewing, my laptop, and I'm happy as a pig in mud.
