Why May Palm Beach In Manly Have The World’s First Urban Night Sky Park?

Before the introduction of electricity and city life, thousands of twinkling stars could be seen when night fell. Unfortunately, due to the increasing dependence on electricity, the stars are becoming harder to see. A woman in Terrey Hills is the driving force behind making the world’s first Urban Night Sky Park at Palm Beach in Manly, NSW. Urban Night Sky Parks are chosen by the International Dark-Sky Association for their exceptional clear skies which are ideal for stargazing. This is despite their close proximity to major cities. Between late August and October you can see five planets by the naked eye. There’s Mercury, Venus Saturn, Jupiter and sometimes Uranus. What do you think LiveTribers? Why may Palm Beach in Manly have the world’s first Urban Night Sky Park?

I was a bit confused about the reference to 'in Manly' and that is just a mistake in the original article where I think this information comes from. There it also says that Palm Beach is ideally situated to be a Urban Night Sky Park as "the Pacific Ocean is on one side and Ku-Ring-gai Chase National Park on the other". I think this is a great idea - I'd love to be able to see the stars clearly. I learnt to identify a lot of constellations when I was in Broken Hill but haven't really been able to see any of them again as I live in the suburbs of Sydney. I do agree with the people who have pointed out that Palm Beach isn't easily accessed and there is very limited parking up there.

I pity the residents who live close as they also deserve to have a quality of life. In some ways I see it as good idea & in others not, as it could bring more people who thrive on being misfits of society & spoiling it for those doing the right thing. it's that full moon that brings out the worst in people lol

Palm Beach residents are NIMBYs and wouldn't allow visitors to be there especially at night as it may disturb their privileged lifestyle. Manly is too far away from Palm Beach and really only one road in or out to get there.

Fantastic, brilliantly bright idea. To be so close to the city and have a Park within reach is absolutely amazing. People do miss out on these opportunities and to have the pleasure to gaze, all those twinkling stars above, will bring so much joy to everyone.

City people in general miss out on seeing the star studded sky because of all the electric lights . It will be an incredible experience for them and a great education for the kids . My late husband used to be able to navigate ( on the water) via the stars , something city people miss out on .

An urban night sky park is an wonderful, inspiring idea, I personally would visit it. As long as they keep enough control so tourists don't make a bad or unwanted impact on the locals, I believe it can work. Seeing planets in the sky!!! Yes please. I can see them from where I live. I'd love to!

I really don't see how this would work as both Manly and Palm Beach are high profile and highly populated suburbs. There would still be too much light from the areas to see any stars. Better off going to the outer suburbs or even the Blue Mountains.

It's a uniquely remarkable location for this proposal. As a lifelong stargazer and a city dwellers this works for me on every level. Instead of having earth hour once a year, this could combine with more frequent voluntary 'blackouts'.

It is good to know that Palm Beach in Manly is ideal for stargazing specially if you live around Sydney but it you want to see the real out of this world amazing star gazing, you should try the Cameron Corner in the outback where South Australia, Queensland and New South Wales meet. I have seen it with my own naked eyes... amazing!

I think the Kuring-gai Chase National Park area known as West Head across Pittwater from Palm Beach would fill this Night Sky Park admirably already. The only way you would get better night skies to see the stars would be if you go into the genuine outback - or 'back of Bourke' as they call it. I really doubt too many city slickers wold be interested though.

The suburb of Manly in NSW is an 1 hour and 25 minute drive to Palm Beach NSW by car. I don’t live in either suburb, and I don’t believe the majority of the Palm Beach local residents would be wanting their oasis being trampled upon by more visitors to the area ruining their environment by “tourism” (commercial businesses might be in favour of this attraction, but I don’t think anyone else would be). Does Palm Beach really want to become like or similar to Manly Beach?

My first though was how far apart the two suburbs were too. Doubt too many city slickers would be interested in seeing the stars anyway. But there is already a huge national park across Pittwater from Palm Beach which would be perfect to watch the stars from.
