Why Have Concerns Been Reignited About Habitat Loss After A Koala Was Spotted Walking Along North Haven Beach?

The rare sight of a koala wandering along a northern New South Wales beach has delighted onlookers but raised concerns among wildlife carers. The koala is an endangered species and wildlife carers say the incident highlights the impact of koala habitat loss in urban areas. Koalas appearing on North Haven Beach has happened before, but not as regular as say the dolphins or the whales. What are your thoughts LiveTribers? Why have concerns been reignited about habitat loss after a koala was spotted walking along North Haven beach?

This Labor Government and their renewable energy dream, they are stripping bear old growth forests and koala habitat to put up wind turbine sand roads, this is happening right across the country but especially in Queensland, disgracefull and the environment minister signs off on this>

Their natural habitat is being destroyed due to humans and housing work

What a strange site to see a koala walking on a beach. Just another sign of the changing world brought on by climate change.

It's important to remind people about our impact on koalas and other native species. There needs to be greater protection of remaining habitats.

I believe most people wouldn't mind some of their taxes used to protect our native animals instead of being wasted in other areas.

I visited a Koala sanctuary last year and learnt about the koala's who despite being injured and returned to their native habitat more than once but are found wandering again started me thinking. They are often returned 2 and 3 times but keep leaving so obviously they don't want to be where they are being put. Yes, they are endangered and their habitat is shrinking so perhaps the very best thing for them would for them to be kept in a fenced off area somewhere. There could be a few of them dotted about enabling people to go and see them in the "wild". They get hit by cars and golf balls, get chased by dogs and cats, but why are they on the move? Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind so in an effort to keep our national treasure they should impounded.

I think you're over reacting a bit to this. I read this on a news blog...and yes, It will happen from time to time. They need looking after of course, but there are other wild animals in Australia that are far more endangered than the koalas. But we hear less about them and they should receive just as much attention as the koalas do.

We had a Koala walking down our street recently and we are over 3km from any bush areas which proves that they can wander anywhere they feel like, with nothing to do with their habitat. As to being an endangered species, they may have low numbers in some areas but there are plenty in the bush areas around my location. Koalas are widespread throughout eucalypt woodlands and forests in lowland Victoria and a few years back they had to relocate many because of a population explosion.
