Why Has Qantas Announced It Will Scrap Its Gender-Based Uniform Guidelines?

Qantas relaxes uniform rules, with flat shoes, make-up, and long hair an option for everyone. Australia's national airline, Qantas, has announced it will scrap its gender-based uniform guidelines. Male staff will be allowed to wear make-up and female staff will have the option of ditching their high heels. Qantas says it has overhauled its guidelines to better reflect modern expectations and to make uniforms more comfortable for staff from "diverse cultural backgrounds". The airline has drawn attention for its fastidious style guidelines in the past which banned handlebar moustaches, policed the length of sideburns, and specified the ideal shades of eyeliner. What are your thoughts LiveTribers? Why has Qantas announced it will scrap its gender-based uniform guidelines?

I just want an airline to be professional. I dont need to have mardi gras on a long haul flight.

Well, I think this is an excellent idea, especially about the footwear. I always felt sorry for the hostesses having to wear high heels during a long haul flight, which couldn't have been that good for their feet in the long run.

That's right, trying to cash in with the LGBT community. How about no staff wear make-up, flat shoes, and unisex uniforms

why is this important? Surely as long as they do their job well and safely why does it matter what they wear? damn let them wear tracksuits if they can do their job safely in them...who cares. i don't see why this is important. the uniforms were originally meant to cater to men's desires anyway so its kind of outdated and has no practical purposes. as long as passengers can recognise who is staff and who is a passenger in important situations it doesn't matter what they wear imo.

Giving in to the woke culture. In fact, they champion the cause.

Because it is trying to cash in the LGBT market. It is a marketing ploy.

Seems like a fair policy - especially ditching high heels - who in their right mind would choose to wear high heels on a long haul flight! As with many of these policies, a few will squawk, but for the vast majority, nothing will change apart from better conditions for the staff.

It will bring it's dress code into line with modern standards, however community changes may require some more standards. The only restriction would be that their dress does not interfere with safety as this is the primary function of inflight staff - not the pandering of fussy passengers.

That'll be a first. How about some male Flight Attendants in Skirts and Blouse? That'll really set the airline apart from any other.

It should be an individuals choice what uniform they choose to,wear, Qantas should still give freedom of choice . They are our countries flag bearer and making a direction like this is pandering to alternatives

As long as they are all neat and tidy as we've always seen from airline staff, I'm pleased for them. When I was young it was the airline uniforms that always set standards and no reason for it not to continue with both sexes wearing whichever styles they prefer.

I agree that female staff should have the choice of wearing more comfortable shoes & not wear makeup, however I personally would prefer that males not wear makeup,it maybe unacceptable these days to have that opinion, however I believe that males & females are different.

This will allow staff to be more comfortable on long haul flights. High heels are not ideal when you are on your feet for many hours.

Qantas is moving with the times but this could backfire - we seem to be have more inclusive policies at the sacrifice of Australian culture

It is a good move for the employees, they can dress in what they are most comfortable with. I do find it weird allowing men to wear make-up though but to each their own, I guess.

I think another airline already did this, so they are probably just following suit.

To be honest I am over all this gender identity stuff. If you wish to identify away from your born genetic and biological identity then that is OK but when you work for someone such as Qantas who has a uniform for male/female then that should be worn. Pandering to the needs of each minority has gone too far. I do not want to see men wearing makeup because they say they are female. They are not female. The just want to be. I do not want to see them compete against females or enter female areas to undress in front of women and children. I agree not all are in this mould but enough to be very wary. It's like everyone is hopping on this bandwagon from ads on TV, to reality shows, to normal TV programs, to businesses etc. and even in schools. Airlines do not let women on who show too much skin and actually remove them. This is not making them feel inclusive but judged. It seems being a natural women these days is not popular and shunned. Removing high heels whilst in flight is fine but the standards should still be set to a standard not a guideline to appease it seems the minority.
