Why Do Australians Love The Mullet?

The mullet hairstyle from the 80’s has seen a global resurgence, but many in Australia claim it as a cultural icon. A fashion mullet is a haircut and an Australian mullet is a way of life. Australia has been particularly enthusiastic about it’s return. Australians love mullets because they consider themselves to be larrikins. And the history of the larrikin is a very interesting thing. A larrikin is a cheeky rule-breaker but that’s not the original meaning. In the 1800s, larrikins were urban, working class youth gangs. The larrikins used fashion as a form of rebellion. What do you think LiveTribers? Why do Australians love the mullet?

The modern day Mullet is totally different to the fashionable SO COOL Mullet of the 80"s, 90"s. Anyone wanting to see a great Mullet should watch John Farnham performing - what a Mullet, what an Artist, just divine.

It's cheap, and easy to maintain.

It’s not my personal preference but it’s pretty hilarious to see modern day mullets. 80’s mullets were epic. I love they have the best mullet contests

Couldn't tell you why but it's no worse than many other haircuts. Not everything is for everyone and that's fine. Let people like what they like without gatekeeping.

I'm not a fan of the mullet at all. I do think its just a fashion at the moment and am looking forward to the next style to take over.

Because it is originally Australian. It is popular with people from the country. I think it looks cool on some people.

It's better than the man bun! I don't mind the mullet on some men as it does give me the feeling they're a bad boy...especially if they play some form of sport.

For some reason the mullet is a badge of honour amongst bogans but screams filthbag to most people. Wouldn't even rock the mullet as a joke. Errgh.

People can wear their hair how they like and if they want to look stupid then that's fine by me.

I can remember my hair almost resembling a mullet with the sides in a shorter style because it was easier to sweep my hair up, but it was never full-on mullet hairstyle. I never did like the look of the true mullet hairstyle, and am sorry to see it come back.

I think most people actually think they look ridiculous but we just let people make fools of themselves. It's the Australian idea of a joke.

I think people in Australia love the mullet at the moment but it’s only for a short time and this fashion will fade away again.

I think its really unflattering to anyone that chooses a mullet but its up to them and I wouldn't say anything to anyone choosing to wear one. I think they're pretty awful myself.

No I think they are awful as with the shadow facial hair, beards, etc. Add to that tattoos also. You are only young for a short period, look the best you can as you will never get those years back.

I did until they became trendy and the yuppies and people too lazy to get a haircut started growing them. Nowadays the mullet is like a tattoo or a ponytail on old men. People get them because they think they look cool, not realising that they look like idiots unless they are under 30.

I am not sure, but it would be the greatest cover for one's neck if one worked out in the sun every day. It sure would be cooler than wearing a hat with a back covering too.
