What More Can Be Done To Prevent Wildlife Habitat Loss?

With Australia’s shocking extinction record coming under closer scrutiny since the 2019-20 bushfires, and with the election of a new government, a conservation group is calling for habitat to be the highest priority. Habitat loss is one of the key threats to Australia’s wildlife, and data from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) says it is the number one driver of biodiversity loss worldwide. IFAW works across Australia, and internationally, using a holistic approach to address this. Notwithstanding, “we can plant all the trees in the world, but if we’re simultaneously cutting them down in areas of crucial wildlife habitat, we will only fail in our critical task of protecting Australia’s iconic native species.”

Developers should be contributing to support for the wildlife so they could be moved to other areas instead of destroying their habitat.

Just leave them alone. Everyone should respect their boundaries. We wouldn't like if Lions are roaming in cities likewise they wouldn't like human interference

State government and local council stops blind land clearance for developments. There is literally no control here as every local council sees property developments as money printing machines while State government throws down development targets onto local councils. Latest example is massive property developments are Greater Sydney's flood zones in far NSW. The site to be built is one of the most endangered ecosytems. Problem is when the state government promises to 'swap lands' for 'ecological reservation', they don't deliver the promises. Latest exampe is at Southern part of Sydney, said this ages ago for 'land swaping' to have a 'new natural reserve at St George (if I remember correctly), never happen.

Totally agree, we cannot protect wildlife if we insist on removing their natural habitats/forests for development.

Fully support the post to control your cats…it is one small way responsible cat owners can do to support this cause …

A simple way to improve the loss of Australia's wildlife is to control our pets and become responsible pet owners. For example, walk your dog on a lead and ensure they are not able to roam. Don't take your dogs onto beaches where hooded plovers nest. Don't allow your cats outside to catch native birds and small native animals. Provide them with a cat run or enclosure to enjoy the fresh air, protection from other cats or becoming road kill. De-sex your pets so the number of unwanted litters and stray animals is reduced.

Proressively ban domestic Cats and aggressively exterminate all non original feral animals including dingoes, black rats, blackbirds, Indian Minor Birds, as much as the misguided English and others mistakenly bought to our shores. You may include introduced pest plants in the above. We'll have to keep Domestic Honey Bees but not the Veroa Mites!

The answer is ignore the greenies and let the aboriginals do many low intensity burns as they did for 40,000 years!

Good on you Francis. Someone with common sense. We should completely disregard the biased and often highly exaggerated BS that the tree huggers flood us with.
