It’s been revealed that Chinese tourists have been encouraged to take
part in hunting Australian wildlife, including wombats. Although wombats are
culled legally in some areas, this type of organised hunting trip has caused
quite a stir. What do you think LiveTribers? Should hunting wombats be banned?
Should they only be culled in problem areas? Let us know what you think.

There is no need for anyone to hunt wombats indigenous or otherwise, the hunting
of animal for food is from a long gone time that doesn't exist - there are now
shops to buy meat so the idea that its is some cultures right to hunt them
especially so cruelly by stoning them is so out of touch with 2019 where we are
Culture - what sort of "culture" can justify this cruel unnecessary way of
mistreating animals. They might have had to do it hundreds of years ago to
survive, but now in 2019 - just not believable and was this bloke going to skin
it and eat it - most likely not. Its barbaric that in 2019 someone thought this
was ok to do, and others are supporting it.
Hunting of ducks and other creatures is another barbaric practise - the ones who
do that are cruel in humane and sick in the head.
I was watching a show today which told of a Mange that is attacking our wombats
and is killing them in large numbers to the point that areas now have none left.
There is a funding page to donate to to try and find a cure but also to
purchase the products to help the poor animals who suffer dreadfully. The
product they spray on the burrows is not really working all that well so they
need a better co-ordinated effort. Whilst I was watching this show I thought
why don't a group of these so call environmental warriors who could go with an
experienced animal worker/vet and spend a weekend a month catching and helping
the animals and whilst at it pick up any rubbish and maybe plant a tree or two.
I think now this would be more productive than marching in the streets drinking
out of plastic bottles which they discard.
I dont think it should be banned as this countrys indinenous population hunts
them as part of there culture for food but i think that if you are not an
Australian resident and you get caught out hunting wombats you should get fined
really heavily and face automatic a 6 month plus automatic jail term and once
people see this is happening they will think twice about breaking the law...
For starters, i,d like to say WTF ! is wrong with people out there, that they
have to kill living things for fun. Humans are the most fucked up race on the
planet. And the Asian,s ' not being racist ' R the worst when it comes to animal
cruelty, u just have to go on the net to c some of the fucked up things they do
to animals. Its one thing to kill animals for food and to eat,or if they r out
of control and causing problems or damage due to really high numbers of that
animal. It,s nothing but wrong and fucked up killing and/or torturing / killing
in-inhumanely, any living thing for any other reason. And it,s even more fucked
up people who kill for fun. If they really r a big problem in some areas, then
do it quickly and discretely. making it a tourism thing only encourages more
killing. When the numbers r down and the problem area,s r ok again, IS it
going to stop, or r they going to keep on killing to sustain there new tourism
business, and then what, keep on hunting them to extinction. IT,S JUST NOT
AUSTRALIAN. And these people encouraging and promoting this are not true
aussies. Whats next, killing our Koala,s. All just to make a quick buck.
No self-respecting Australian would hunt the wombat. Why would we allow overseas
visitors to hunt them! Give me a break. I have difficulty thinking of of a more
defenceless animal. Shame on those who organise such tours.
What on earth, how has a government department allowed THIS to happen to a
native animal? What tourist company can we blame for this - something to further
excite 'tourists'. Where are our animal liberationists - here's a worthwhile job
for you to concentrate your energies on. If a government department is culling
then it should be carried out by that department not subletting to tourist
What a stupid ? of course we should invite other nationalities to indulge
themselves in an killing of our fauna that takes their fancy. Maybe we could
encourage them to take part in flora burn off at night after hunting. We might
as well encourage the Japanese back to hunt out whales.
Yes hunting our natural Fauna is prohibited as I understand. All our natural
wild life is under threat and all efforts should be maintained by responsible
and experienced people to give the protection and care to Australian species.
Is this for real ? Not understanding where the thrill in the kill, comes into
hunting a wombat....I can understand pigs and rabbits, as there fast and would
create a rush for the hunters. But a wombat ?? Leave them alone !! BAN IT !!
Definitely banned. The idea of hunting for sport is absolutely disgusting and
wasteful. It would be a little different if they were hunting for food and only
hunted what they absolutely needed to survive. This is one aspect of humanity
that I absolutely detest. We should look after our wildlife, not kill for
Besides, I have actually had the wonderful opportunity of helping to
rehabilitate an injured wombat baby and released it back into wild and they are
adorable, fun and fascinating creatures. The should be celebrated, not hunted.
why hunt or cull wombats, I have never seen one in the wild the many times we
travelled from Perth across to eastern states, by car, we have see plenty of
photos but never live, if this native animal is culled and hunted whats to say
that we won't loose them one day, People should be shot themselves, if they
don't want them send them to W.A., we will welcome them, unlike some of the
rubbish and no hoppers that come across
This is so wrong Wombats are protective l thought , try hunting Panda bears in
China see how far you get , not that l am for killing any animals , definitely
not Pandas l love those to , this is just a statement , If any animals are to
to be culled humanly , it still does have to be hunted by thrill seekers ,
definitely a NO from me on Chinese tourists hunting any of our animals .
This is wrong on so many levels. Our country should be ashamed. Start culling
some of these fucktards. We are not a country to be admired Anymore. Koalas now
wombats. Disgusting. Us as humans target the weak.
hunting them as a sport should be banned as there is no real control. culling is
necessary sometimes but there is control over it. we should ban all wildlife
hunting for sport in the country as there are enough pest species that need to
be better controlled i.e. pigs and rabbits, if they need to hunt let them hunt
I have a permit to shoot wombats, room, and emus. Wombats provide no challenge,
and l don't enjoy doing it; but, like all animals including humans, an over
abundance of numbers in a small area has devastating effects on other native
critters. If only people could see the bare ground when a species gets too
I can't even fathom why we would do this in Australia. And I have to ask if this
is the sort of "Tourism" we want encourage in this country or any country for
that matter. What kind of enjoyment could one possibly obtain from killing
Native Wild Life? I for one have to say band this practice! And make public the
names of individuals/ organisations making it available. DISGUSTING!!!
Rich chinese tourists, it shows you, if you have money, you can do anything
even kill our wildlife. This is absolutely disgusting and should be stopped
now. This country is going to hell, all people seem to want to do is kill
things, shoot them and 1080 everything else. People need to start caring and
lobby their politicians and protest. I think this country has killed enough.
OMG this is horrible.. Cull animals only when needed too. Who is encouraging
them to take part needs to be an official Australian wildlife represent if not,
why are they getting away with that...??? The people behind these terrible
crimes should be dealt with severely
I am horrified, go hunt something in your own country tourists. I am totally
disgusted that something like this would be allowed! Who gave this sneaky
approval, thankyou for informing us. Who can we write too???
How totally outrageous, Wombats are endangered in most parts of Australia and
critically in some parts, To think someone would intentionally hurt one of our
special and sacred animals is horrific to even think about. As it is far too
many are hit by traffic unintentionally and are depleting their numbers
drastically. Wombats are Australian icons.
All "Animal Hunting " should be illegal and incur hefty fines. Any " culling "
of animals should remain in the hands of Professional Government " Doggers "
Persons who dump unwanted animals should be named , shamed and heavily fined [
as their unwanted pets regularly become nasty wild animals after being dumped ]
Ah da of course it should what kind of absolutely stupid question even is that.
Let's just kill everything on our earth until there's nothing left but us and
then we'll be the only creatures on earth and then we'll die to well done to the
humans you are so damn smart!
Well I think it depends as to whether the species is over populating humans
don't you? U have seen/heard the planet of the apes? And I'm not sure about
Wombat but I know or kangaroos have over populating us yet we aren't allowed to
just shoot any we see
Why don't they hunt kangaroos, which cause such major environmental and farming
damage? I do NOT support the hunting of wombats. They are harmless, gentle
creatures and the idea of hunting them is repellent. Please stop these
Wombats should never be legally hunted as a sport, nor should they be culled
unless they have a disease. This beautiful animal is one of Australia’s
Native animals so leave them alone so everyone can enjoy them for generations to
come. The Chinese should be told animals in this country are not for hunting.
Should never happen as they are harmless animal and if there are concerns with
over population (I've never seen a stray one) then just move on, just like
koalas which are becoming as scarce as hen's teeth.
The Chinese just cull anything they can and then move on to other resources once
extinct. In a nutshell, just leave them alone and to their own survival.
I did'nt know that it was legally sanctioned in Australia, and if it is then i
feel physically sick!! I know of farmers that have been killing them illegally
for years by poisoning, shooting and filling in their burrows in effect
suffocating them to death with the tacit approval of authorities, and along with
other forms of animal cruelty,i often find myself ashamed to be a part of the
human race - the so called "intelligent species" inhabiting this planet!
I agree with Groove 45, why is it allowed???
Wombats make the cutest pets if you have a large block of land and don't mind
falling down holes, but that is no reason to kill them.
Yes, BAN all shooting of wombats.
If you want to shoot something, go to Queensland and shoot feral pigs, the
Queenslanders will be grateful for all the help they can get with that pest!
yes are people made killing our wombats, aren't they happy enough about
killing roos and pandas now the idiots are killing more of our beautiful
animals , if they want to kill go to america they kill anything on 2 or 4 legs
Hunting for wombats is sick and so is duck hunting in Australia. Fox hunting
was very cruel and that was banned in England, thank goodness. The poor
innocent fox had not only all the hounds after it but the hunters as well. Why
do we have to kill animals for sport. Wombats are sweet, I had a little one
years ago follow my shadow so cute and innocent. What messages are we sending
if we allow these cruel hunting animals for sport in Australia, it's bad enough
what they do in America etc. They'll end up wanting to hunt more that just
Wombat hunting should, without a shadow of a doubt, be banned and those caught
in contravention, should face heavy penalties. Culling in problem areas, by
appropriate authorities only, should continue as at present.
I do not agree with this. Wombat slaughter is not a sport. They are slow,
relatively large and generally not a pest. In some places they can be a pest
though and can be reasonably culled by people who know what they are doing.
If people want to start up sports hunting how about deer? Or wild pigs, of
ferel cats ? Something that has a useful outcome.
The thought of this is absolutely disgusting. I know a property that has wombats
everywhere. The only time they should be touched is if they are sick and this
should be done by a professional.
Whoever came up with this needs to learn about the protection of wildlife.
Absolutely this practice should be banned. I am horrified this is even
happening. Given the wombats natural speed they are easy targets for tourists.
Honestly do the organizers and those taking part have no shame.
Only if we need culling but I think this should be done by professionals as we
do not want animals to suffer if wounded and not put out of their pain.
Wombats are like shooting a still target pretty gutless to shoot a defences slow
moving animal .
Awww, this made me feel so sad. I adore wombats. I had the privilege of holding
a little Tasmanian one at a zoo some years ago and what a darling little animals
he was. I can't imagine why people would want to hunt ANY animal. I think it's
cruel and disgusting.
Our wildlife is struggling to survive against human impact as it is without
sick demented humans wanting to kill them for so called fun. Shame on our
governments for not enforcing our wildlife protection laws.
i lived on property never ever had problems with wombats this is the first time
ive heard of any wombats been culled no they shouldn,t be culled why are humans
so cruel that they have to kill another living species what do the wombats do
that cause problems im not aware of any issues as far as chinese coming hear to
kill our wildlife is disgraceful how are they getting away with this these are
our animals chinese have no respect for anything let alone any animal they don,t
