Should Pet Dogs Have Their DNA Registered In Australia?

Dog owners in Tel Aviv, Israel must now provide DNA samples for their dogs upon receiving or renewing their dog ownership licenses, in an effort to fight against the issue of dog faeces in the street not being picked up by their owners. What do you think LiveTribers, should pet dogs have their DNA registered in Australia?

I walk my little dog several times a day and see large dogs off leash constantly in the street sometimes 6 at a time and I live in a dead end road with a park at the top which seems to be where they also just let them loose. Dog faeces on all the lawns, in the park etc. I pick my little dogs droppings up every time and have even offered people a bag to pick up their dogs droppings which most decline. Sounds a good idea to do DNA's which would cost probably around $50 - $100 but who would pick up the droppings and take them to the council. It would have to be an official worker otherwise anyone could take droppings in out of mischief and this could cause more problems. It would be a full time job just in my area. The costs to the ratepayers would be very high. Most pets have micro chips injected just after birth with their first vaccinations. If they go to the vets and none is shown then one should be inserted at the owners cost. Cats also cause huge problems to our native wildlife but do not need to be registered and wander at night. They leave their calling cards in my garden.

Bloody good idea. I've always believed dog owners should be tracked and registered just like their mutts!!!

Personally, I think it should be the animal OWNERS that should have their DNA taken!! They should also be licensed to keep animals especially as so many are dumped, abandoned and back yard bred in many cases for money !!

There are already plenty of costs for dog owners. If the DNA testing also helped the owner to confirm their dog's breed, any genetic conditions, as well as Councils wanting to deter culprits perhaps Owners could view it as an investment in the dog as well as a Council requirement?
