Should Marijuana Be Legal in Australia?

At the end of January 2020, it will be legal to possess and grow marijuana for personal use in the ACT. The bill was passed last week and means you are allowed to have four marijuana plants per household and 50 grams per person. What do you think of this LiveTribers? Is this a good idea? Should marijuana be legal in all states and territories?

I understood from my recent visit to Canberra as the bill was announced to much excitement I must say, they can have 2 plants for personal use but it is still, under Federal law, illegal. There was no mention anywhere about the driving legalities. I believe marijuana should be legal for all medical purposes when verified by a doctor, not just for cancer, but have doubts about it being made legal for tbe general public. You never know how it is going to effect an individual.

100% right on with organic marijuana being legalised, I wish WA would get up to the 21st Century and consider this as well. I think if marijuana is legal to grow this potentially has some benefits and also some disadvantages, although this could be hashed out in an open forum with all walks of life invited to attend as well as professionals such as Police, Doctors, Health Care Providers, Scientists and perhaps it can be worked out if this is feasible. May need to sign a disclaimer with Insurance Companies perhaps. We can learn a great deal from having these open discussions and liaise with Countries who have these laws which have been in place for many years!

Really.... wouldn't you consider it to be legal across the whole human race instead of making us a Nanny State, putting more and more barricades up and red tape for such a law to be introduced and then allowing each adult person to make their own informed decision....perhaps we wouldn't get so many people being so stressed out because my understanding, albeit basic, is that consuming marijuana takes the edge off .... there has to be at least some discussion rather than throwing more money intro trying to regulate such a thing IF the WA people want this in place for the right reasons. Why spend more money which really only drives things like this underground - what do you think?

I think it should be legal under controlled circumstances, where people are in extreme pain, and need it to help them with their afflictions. Otherwise it can lead to stronger dangerous drugs, such as "ice".

My father has suffered chronic severe lower back pain for 10 years and cannot work at all... He was then diagnosed with MS 5 years ago... He has to use fentanyl patches tramadol 200mg twice a day and a few other neurological type of medication which in turn has left him with an adrenal deficiency with his MS attacking his nervous system and his body not being strong enough to stop the bad bugs etc making him sick.. if weed was made legally available for him to use them maybe he could stop talking the only choice he has that is almost doing more bad than good but is his only choice

I think medical marijuana should be legalized. It seems to help people in real need and pain and while I’m not a recreational drug user, if people chose to use it as such, that’s a choice they make and it seems a better option than ice, cocaine, and many other drugs.

Should be legal globally. Lets stop the hypocrisy. Everybody knows that the most dangerous drugs on the planet are alcohol, cigarettes and prescribed drugs, all of which generate a healthy government revenue. I never heard of anybody overdosing on marijuana because it is not possible. How then can it still be regarded as a drug? Oh, but we cannot allow its legalisation because then people will grow their own, possibly quit the existing dangerous ‘options’, therefore leaving the government, tobacco and pharmaceutical companies our of pocket! Haha. What a joke.

Yes. Why would marijuana be illegal while alcohol remains legal and is a very mqjor cause of much crime and suffering in thye forms of domestic violence, alcoholism, liver disease, poverty and on and on, at great cost to our entire community and governments ? Yhere is so much evidence that marijuana can be helpful for many suffering painful physical conditions, and besides everything else it would disable many criminals who now rely on cannabis being illegal to make their profits and exploit others through the underground sales. It is a ridiculous situation and marijuana should have been made legal decades ago. By the way I am not a user of either alcohol or marijuana.

There is evidence supporting the use of cannabis derivatives in the treatment of some conditions and alleviation of pain. If not already done, formal studies (just the same as any other drug proposed for other illnesses) to establish it's validity and the government should then act based on the objective findings rather than subjective opinions.

Thats crap. Alcohol and cigarettes create more addicts than anything else. I have yet to meet a non smoking drug addict, nor an alcoholic that ONLY drinks. They pop pills and take anything to get wasted. If you are an addictive personality you will want more than marijuana thats for sure. But don’t blame the herb for it. It does not create addictive personalities. I have known many addicts that never touched marijuana. It was never on their radar because it simply isn’t deadly enough.

No. Because once the door is opened to this, it has to be opened for everything else. The old axiom is true "That which you encourage, you get more of". In a society filled with mature, responsible adults there would be no need for restrictions of any kind. But the west isn't filled with mature, responsible adults. It's filled with selfish, brash, foolish, licentious children who make it their mission in life to get away with as much as they can, consequences be damned. Look at this tiny example: what rational, level-headed human being would willingly partake of a product known and proven to destroy one's lungs, addict one to nicotine, and cause 101 different kinds of systemic cancers? None. Yet, the world has hundreds of millions of smokers. Take off the restraints on narcotic "feel good" product like cannabis and we open Pandora's box. I kid you not. We think the problems with teens, drunk drivers and domestic violence are bad now? Multiply that 1000 fold once we add "legal" weed into the mix. And weed will only be the start. There is a reason things like weed were prohibited in the first place: people showed themselves incapable of self-control. Where there is lawlessness, there will always be someone to impose control and order. Usually, if we chose not to behave ourselves without someone imposing order externally, external controls will be harsh, unwieldy, fascist and totalitarian.

The only reason marijuana is illegal is because the government, tobacco, alcohol and pharmaceutical companies will lose DOLLARS $$$$. That is until they get smart people to run the country who will ban alcohol and cigarettes, and educate the medical profession that opiates should be a last resort and not a first resort. We need to get back to the basics. NATURE. Stop with the chemicals. Marijuana is the lesser of all these evils. If you don”t know anything about it, you should not judge it. I have observed the self destruction of people for many years. The silent pot smokers do not advertise what they do, so they are not judged. Your best friend could be a pot head too scared to tell you.

Marijuana should be made legal for all medical use .. as I have seen first hand the benefits.. making it legal for recreational use is a different storey .. As all other drugs and alcohol it effects people differently.. there are so many worse drugs being used causing so many issues .. so where do you start and where do you stop with what should be legal or not .. but it doesn’t really matter with the Australia legal system does it

yes, there is always going to be a small group of people who will abuse it, the same as people who drink alcohol. The majority of people would use it to relax just the same as someone would have a drink after a hard day at work. Generally those that smoke marijuana just relax unlike alcohol which the more you drink the more aggressive some people become. Humans have been using halucinating products for thousands of years.

If the government legalises something then it needs to take full responsibility for the effects of this bill. We know people have been using marijuana for decades but because it isn't legal, the full responsibility of the ramifications of users has been not high. Once it is legal and therefore something endorsed and condoned by the government, they will with all good conscience need to set up better health resources to assist those in need due to marijuana induced issues. This of course will be in even more demand in the future because the government has given the thumbs up and encouraged more people to use it. Obviously our carving government would only make something legal if it was completely safe right?????????

No, definitely not. A friend's son was a regular user and now is bad schizophrenic. It mostly is important to resolve and prevent the nausea associated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments for cancer. It seems a much more appropriate pain-killer than the Fentanyl patches(morphine) I needed to use. 6 years ago there was no medical marijuana in sight for me to use. Now it is readily available and I agree wholeheartedly that we decriminalise and legalise its use for medical reasons, only. I had stage 3 breast cancer and 6 months of chemotherapy plus another month of radiotherapy. Am still recovering but 6 years in remission now, Praise God!!! 0:)

Yes Yes Yes! I get so sick of hearing it leads to mental illness. You have to have a predisposition to mental illness and eventually something, anything will trigger it. MJ doesn't cause it. I've been to the Netherlands and they are not all schizophrenics. Their society is enviable and just because it's legal there doesn't mean they all smoke it. And like drink driving, if you drive under the influence obviously you'll get fined. I've been smoking it for over 37 years!!

I'm all for marijuana used for medical purposes. I am wondering what sort of world you live in though. People do die from alcohol & prescription drugs, no question ..... but what about the people who end up with mental illness because of marijuana? What about the babies who come into the world with disabilities because their parents smoke weed while the kid is still growing in the womb? Medical marijuana uses the marijuana plant or chemicals in it to treat diseases or conditions. It's basically the same product as recreational marijuana, but it's taken for medical purposes. Cannabinoids -- the active chemicals in medical marijuana -- are similar to chemicals the body makes that are involved in appetite, memory, movement, and pain. Research suggests cannabinoids might: Reduce anxiety Reduce inflammation and relieve pain Control nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy Kill cancer cells and slow tumor growth Relax tight muscles in people with MS Stimulate appetite and improve weight gain in people with cancer and AIDS So yes I agree 110% that medical marijuana should be legalised.....
