At the end of January 2020, it will be legal to possess and grow marijuana
for personal use in the ACT. The bill was passed last week and means you are
allowed to have four marijuana plants per household and 50 grams per person.
What do you think of this LiveTribers? Is this a good idea? Should marijuana be
legal in all states and territories?

I understood from my recent visit to Canberra as the bill was announced to much
excitement I must say, they can have 2 plants for personal use but it is still,
under Federal law, illegal. There was no mention anywhere about the driving
legalities. I believe marijuana should be legal for all medical purposes when
verified by a doctor, not just for cancer, but have doubts about it being made
legal for tbe general public. You never know how it is going to effect an
100% right on with organic marijuana being legalised, I wish WA would get up to
the 21st Century and consider this as well.
I think if marijuana is legal to grow this potentially has some benefits and
also some disadvantages, although this could be hashed out in an open forum with
all walks of life invited to attend as well as professionals such as Police,
Doctors, Health Care Providers, Scientists and perhaps it can be worked out if
this is feasible.
May need to sign a disclaimer with Insurance Companies perhaps.
We can learn a great deal from having these open discussions and liaise with
Countries who have these laws which have been in place for many years!
Really.... wouldn't you consider it to be legal across the whole human race
instead of making us a Nanny State, putting more and more barricades up and red
tape for such a law to be introduced and then allowing each adult person to make
their own informed decision....perhaps we wouldn't get so many people being so
stressed out because my understanding, albeit basic, is that consuming marijuana
takes the edge off .... there has to be at least some discussion rather than
throwing more money intro trying to regulate such a thing IF the WA people want
this in place for the right reasons. Why spend more money which really only
drives things like this underground - what do you think?
I think it should be legal under controlled circumstances, where people are in
extreme pain, and need it to help them with their afflictions. Otherwise it can
lead to stronger dangerous drugs, such as "ice".
My father has suffered chronic severe lower back pain for 10 years and cannot
work at all... He was then diagnosed with MS 5 years ago... He has to use
fentanyl patches tramadol 200mg twice a day and a few other neurological type
of medication which in turn has left him with an adrenal deficiency with his MS
attacking his nervous system and his body not being strong enough to stop the
bad bugs etc making him sick.. if weed was made legally available for him to use
them maybe he could stop talking the only choice he has that is almost doing
more bad than good but is his only choice
Well u r right it should be made legal and prescribed by doctors who know that
sick patients so please write to the medical asociatation and to government to
push them to legalise it so there can be Somme good use for if monitored by
I think medical marijuana should be legalized. It seems to help people in real
need and pain and while I’m not a recreational drug user, if people chose to
use it as such, that’s a choice they make and it seems a better option than
ice, cocaine, and many other drugs.
Yes better the real drug be legal not the synthetic drugs.
Which I see are much more of pain relief than the synthetic drugs.
I don't smoke the drugs at all but have seen the effects of what can & does
Synthetic drug absolutely NO..
Real marijuana definitely YES..
I would love to see this happen all over the country.
Of course there will people who abuse the rules, but that's fine, they'll get
So many people can benefit from this plant.
As a sufferer of PTSD and Anxiety, I'm all for it when it comes to controlling
I just spent 6 weeks in Canada, and every place I went had 1 or 2 Hemp shops.
Funnily enough I never once saw anyone enter. I travelled right across
So legalise it and people wont want.
Except the Cancer patients who could use it to help the pain like my mate who
uses daily he is dying of Cancer. its legal in SA to grow 2 plants for personal
use, why not the whole country.
I believe that marijuana should be legalised to be grown and used as medicinal
marijuana only and be legalised for the use of those patients who require it
across a broad spectrum not just young children with severe epilepsy.
Should be legal globally. Lets stop the hypocrisy. Everybody knows that the most
dangerous drugs on the planet are alcohol, cigarettes and prescribed drugs, all
of which generate a healthy government revenue. I never heard of anybody
overdosing on marijuana because it is not possible. How then can it still be
regarded as a drug? Oh, but we cannot allow its legalisation because then people
will grow their own, possibly quit the existing dangerous ‘options’,
therefore leaving the government, tobacco and pharmaceutical companies our of
pocket! Haha. What a joke.
Medical purpose only.
Scripted by a Doctor only as for required treatment.
For social needs, we do not need another drug on the open market.(being sold by
un-trust worthy people on the corner or in the toilet/ I think you get the
I think that decriminalisation of marijuana is important and rehabs or
counselling services available for people who are unable to control its use.
Throwing people into jail for smoking marijuana is not the answer. Education is
the plant matter should be legal in all of the Australian waters for
recreational and medical use
it would reduce the crime rate and allow police to do business with real issues
in local communities
it allows for a taxable area for all users of the marijuana family
it allows for medical groups to have a broader range of plant matter to work
with in medical research
I'm not sure. I can see that there may be many benefits for medical conditions
however medicinal cannabis is available now. I think if it is made legal then
we need to make sure that there is some procedure in place to monitor the use.
Why? Do we monitor alcohol use? Getting trashed land making a nuisance of
yourself has been socially acceptable forever, but getting stoned on a plant
that cannot kill you needs monitoring??? Lets all test the weed first. No
problems I will test it for the music festivals.
There are so many people out there that would benefit healthwise from this
instead of having to take tablets which have terrible side effects. Personally
I suffer from Fibromyalgia and chronic pain as a result of being hit by a car
and this would help me so much. I would love to have this legalised.
Yes. Why would marijuana be illegal while alcohol remains legal and is a very
mqjor cause of much crime and suffering in thye forms of domestic violence,
alcoholism, liver disease, poverty and on and on, at great cost to our entire
community and governments ? Yhere is so much evidence that marijuana can be
helpful for many suffering painful physical conditions, and besides everything
else it would disable many criminals who now rely on cannabis being illegal to
make their profits and exploit others through the underground sales. It is a
ridiculous situation and marijuana should have been made legal decades ago. By
the way I am not a user of either alcohol or marijuana.
There is evidence supporting the use of cannabis derivatives in the treatment of
some conditions and alleviation of pain. If not already done, formal studies
(just the same as any other drug proposed for other illnesses) to establish it's
validity and the government should then act based on the objective findings
rather than subjective opinions.
Thats crap. Alcohol and cigarettes create more addicts than anything else. I
have yet to meet a non smoking drug addict, nor an alcoholic that ONLY drinks.
They pop pills and take anything to get wasted. If you are an addictive
personality you will want more than marijuana thats for sure. But don’t blame
the herb for it. It does not create addictive personalities. I have known many
addicts that never touched marijuana. It was never on their radar because it
simply isn’t deadly enough.
No. Because once the door is opened to this, it has to be opened for everything
else. The old axiom is true "That which you encourage, you get more of". In a
society filled with mature, responsible adults there would be no need for
restrictions of any kind. But the west isn't filled with mature, responsible
adults. It's filled with selfish, brash, foolish, licentious children who make
it their mission in life to get away with as much as they can, consequences be
damned. Look at this tiny example: what rational, level-headed human being would
willingly partake of a product known and proven to destroy one's lungs, addict
one to nicotine, and cause 101 different kinds of systemic cancers? None. Yet,
the world has hundreds of millions of smokers. Take off the restraints on
narcotic "feel good" product like cannabis and we open Pandora's box. I kid you
not. We think the problems with teens, drunk drivers and domestic violence are
bad now? Multiply that 1000 fold once we add "legal" weed into the mix. And weed
will only be the start. There is a reason things like weed were prohibited in
the first place: people showed themselves incapable of self-control. Where there
is lawlessness, there will always be someone to impose control and order.
Usually, if we chose not to behave ourselves without someone imposing order
externally, external controls will be harsh, unwieldy, fascist and totalitarian.
The only reason marijuana is illegal is because the government, tobacco, alcohol
and pharmaceutical companies will lose DOLLARS $$$$. That is until they get
smart people to run the country who will ban alcohol and cigarettes, and educate
the medical profession that opiates should be a last resort and not a first
resort. We need to get back to the basics. NATURE. Stop with the chemicals.
Marijuana is the lesser of all these evils. If you don”t know anything about
it, you should not judge it. I have observed the self destruction of people for
many years. The silent pot smokers do not advertise what they do, so they are
not judged. Your best friend could be a pot head too scared to tell you.
No way should it be made legal. I have personally seen people who have used it
and gone onto harder stuff. The ones who haven't progressed to harder stuff
often end up with mental problems and often lead a terrible life on the streets.
This crap can destroy a lot of people and their family's . Spoken from personal
Marijuana should be able to be used for medicinal purposes only. I don't agree
with it being legal for any other purpose. If you can't enjoy yourself without
getting buzzed then you need to reexamine your life.
If the government is going to allow the sale of cigarettes, alcohol and
processed foods then it would be hypocritical and suspicious not to legalise a
substance no more harmful than cigarettes, equally intoxicating as alcohol and
as easily abused as processed foods. There are many studies into the benefits of
marijuana for treating pain, nausea, seizures etc while all studies on Nicotine
indicate how dangerous it is
You do realise marijuana actually helps with mental health? It helps with
anxiety, depression, anger issues among others. There are many studies
supporting this as well as thousands of case studies and examples of how much it
has helped. You may be getting marijuana confused with hardcore or dangerous
drugs. It is a common misconception.
Marijuana should be made legal for all medical use .. as I have seen first hand
the benefits.. making it legal for recreational use is a different storey .. As
all other drugs and alcohol it effects people differently.. there are so many
worse drugs being used causing so many issues .. so where do you start and where
do you stop with what should be legal or not .. but it doesn’t really matter
with the Australia legal system does it
yes, there is always going to be a small group of people who will abuse it, the
same as people who drink alcohol. The majority of people would use it to relax
just the same as someone would have a drink after a hard day at work. Generally
those that smoke marijuana just relax unlike alcohol which the more you drink
the more aggressive some people become. Humans have been using halucinating
products for thousands of years.
So? thats not a bad thing...clean, outdoor-grown M has been used medically for
years....have 1st hand experience of seeing the difference it made in a dying
person life...the evidence is, has been around , officially , since 80's!.. the
weird chemical indoor crap...well who knows, SO LEGALISE it and alls
safe!!..crime goes, health helped...it's a natural plant, meant for use....look
into it!!! PLEASE.
If the government legalises something then it needs to take full responsibility
for the effects of this bill. We know people have been using marijuana for
decades but because it isn't legal, the full responsibility of the ramifications
of users has been not high. Once it is legal and therefore something endorsed
and condoned by the government, they will with all good conscience need to set
up better health resources to assist those in need due to marijuana induced
issues. This of course will be in even more demand in the future because the
government has given the thumbs up and encouraged more people to use it.
Obviously our carving government would only make something legal if it was
completely safe right?????????
No It's not a safe drug for a lot of people. Something needs to be done
regarding all the different drugs available but assuming marijuana is healthy is
ridiculous when there is so much medical data showing the potential risks.
Yes it should it’s a great food source highly nutritious also great for
clothing & is strongest material for rope. Needs less water than cotton is pest
resistant so no need for pesticides & would end world hunger.
No no no never should Marijuana be legalized. My experience with immediate
family using marijuana has been such a nightmare. It changes the mind of users
and over regular use it alters the brain. It maybe not be so bad as Ice or other
drugs but believe me Marijuana is such a mind altering drug such as
Schizophrenia and paranoia harms all concerned
No, definitely not. A friend's son was a regular user and now is bad
schizophrenic. Maybe it could be used medically for cancer sufferers or those in
severe pain, but not the general populace or there could be more schizophrenics
- a major problem for an already overwhelmed Mental Health situation.
I do not think marijuana should be legal it should be band because a few of my
friends smoke it and there friends as well . I have seen many of times my
friends after smoking and eating it that they are no way aware of moving things
around them as what they should be my friends have nearly been hit by numbers of
things while having marijuana when they are not having it they are fine
ADHA people mite be fine but not normal people
I think the oil should be allowed for people that need it from there doctor
I think it should only be allowed for medicinal purposes. How can they police
what is allowed, anyway? They have said in the past, that marijuana usage can be
and sometimes is a stepping stone to stronger and dangerous drugs.
Its got good points such as cancer patients its great for relueving the pain ive
seen this with a friend . I also find f used by ppl with mental issues tebds to
make them very differant and nasty at times ive also experienced this as a nurse
especially chemical grown marijuana . But used by the ppl that are meant to be
using it thats all goid but how will you ensure thats how itll be and it wont be
just an easy way for ppl to market it themselves ????? & wreck it for others how
will it be monitored ???
It mostly is important to resolve and prevent the nausea associated with
chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments for cancer. It seems a much more
appropriate pain-killer than the Fentanyl patches(morphine) I needed to use. 6
years ago there was no medical marijuana in sight for me to use. Now it is
readily available and I agree wholeheartedly that we decriminalise and legalise
its use for medical reasons, only. I had stage 3 breast cancer and 6 months of
chemotherapy plus another month of radiotherapy. Am still recovering but 6 years
in remission now, Praise God!!! 0:)
Yes I agree the oil should be used for medical purposes only. It has been
studied to help people who are in a lot of pain . Interesting to read how Olivia
Newton John has improved since having the oil. She no longer uses morphine etc.
I think this is saying something.
Yes it should be there is a lot of crime because of drugs stop as much as we
can! Jail's are full give someone a bed in there who deserves it like a rock
spider not someone who just wants to get stoned!!
Yes I think it should. I don't smoke it myself, but I think alcohol is more
destructive than marijuana .. and it's legal. And let's face it, the fact that
it's illegal doesn't stop anybody from getting it anyway.
Yes Yes Yes! I get so sick of hearing it leads to mental illness. You have to
have a predisposition to mental illness and eventually something, anything will
trigger it. MJ doesn't cause it. I've been to the Netherlands and they are not
all schizophrenics. Their society is enviable and just because it's legal there
doesn't mean they all smoke it. And like drink driving, if you drive under the
influence obviously you'll get fined. I've been smoking it for over 37 years!!
Yes it should be legal. If you don't want to smoke it then don't but don't stop
people who like to smoke it. Alcohol is far more dangerous. There is also all
the products made from hemp. It would also be good for the economy, think of the
tax the government could collect.....hmmm on second thoughts!! Yes I still think
it should be legal!
I'm all for marijuana used for medical purposes. I am wondering what sort of
world you live in though. People do die from alcohol & prescription drugs, no
question ..... but what about the people who end up with mental illness because
of marijuana? What about the babies who come into the world with disabilities
because their parents smoke weed while the kid is still growing in the womb? I
think your head might be up your bum, or in the sand, it sure isn't in clear
Absolutely yes it should for medical purposes as in patients struggling with
pain and illness associated with diseases and treatment. There is so much
research out there to show that it has major benefits to patients including and
not limited to helping fight cancer so why do t we give patients the absolute
best chance of trying everything!
Yes, but for medical reasons, it certainly helps people in pain. My brother has
MS, and it has helped him for years. However, he can't get it prescribed by a
doctor, so he has to buy it whichever way he can.
Medical marijuana uses the marijuana plant or chemicals in it to treat diseases
or conditions. It's basically the same product as recreational marijuana, but
it's taken for medical purposes. Cannabinoids -- the active chemicals in
medical marijuana -- are similar to chemicals the body makes that are involved
in appetite, memory, movement, and pain.
Research suggests cannabinoids might:
Reduce inflammation and relieve pain
Control nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy
Kill cancer cells and slow tumor growth
Relax tight muscles in people with MS
Stimulate appetite and improve weight gain in people with cancer and AIDS
So yes I agree 110% that medical marijuana should be legalised.....
