Should Greyhound Racing Be Banned?

Greyhound racing is completely legal in just 8 countries (Mexico, Ireland, UK, NZ, Australia, China, USA and Vietnam) because it is deemed too inhumane everywhere else. In the US only four states still have active dog racing tracks. In 2016 the NSW backflipped on a promise to phase out greyhound racing, but if you had it your way LiveTribers, would you ban greyhound racing? Or do you believe the industry is just misunderstood?

Yes it should be completely banned. It is a very cruel sport and the dogs are treated as commodities and not given love and stimulation. They are locked in cages most of the time when they are not being trained and are killed if they do not perform. The horrible live baiting showed just how cruel and unfeeling the "sport" is and the dogs suffer many injuries.

Yes immediately should be banned, just because they have been bred to race and entertain humans does not mean they should keep it up, yes they do like to run but in their own free time not being starved and made to run and only rewarded by food at the end. Animals are sentiment beings and we need to respect them more, include banning horse racing while we are at it. Get humans to run around a track and bet on them at least they can talk and choose if they want to do it. Those who say the greyhounds like it must know how to talk dog speak (not!).

Ban it. I live in an area in Queensland where they all got prosecuted for live baiting. Also in the area is greyhound adoption. I am a dog lover, owner and breeder of Champion St Bernard's, yet in this part of Queensland I see various greyhound owner/racers who are ignorant in caring for their dogs.

Ban it! Ban horse racing too, along with rodeos, circuses or parks (e.g. Sea World) featuring animals, any industry or "sport" that exploits animals for entertainment. It's all wrong. Did you know that many greyhounds no longer profitable as racers are bled out for blood donations prior to being euthanised? Fact. They are bled to death, then given a green dream injection just top make sure they are dead. Now that's treating a dog with love right? FFS.

Greyhound racing cannot be humanely operated. Drugs, live baiting, doping and cheating is simply to easy. You cannot house even 20% of unwanted dogs. This disgraceful industry is not what Australia is about. Yours Steven

i would suggest the greyhounds enjoy racing -- however it is hard to find homes for them when they are too old or injured to race , so the tracks and bookmakers should have to pay a levy towards the cost of keeping the retired greyhounds for the rest of their natural lives

You made it hard to like or dislike your post, no greyhounds do not enjoy being forced to race, yes it is hard to find homes for them when they are worn out, and yes they should pay a levy but better if we banned it.

Banning anything is not an intelligent thing to do, instead provide the real facts for people to make their own minds up, and keep the media out of it as all they do is hyp and sensationalise things. Just use good old common sense.

It's usually the way - there's a few bad eggs in the mix that ruin it for the rest which has been the case in both greyhound & horse racing. I believe the majority of owners/trainers do indeed treat their animals well however I think regulation is absolutely key when dealing with animals to ensure their well being & happiness.

I think greyhound racing should absolutely be banned the dogs are harshly treated. Picture this: you are a dog and everyday you face the horror of your owner in your face whipping you, lashing you till you bleed howl out in pain. You go back to sleep with deep red scars on your back. Dogs are our FRIENDS they are loyal and don't deserve to be treated this way. End greyhound racing. Save the dogs.

Why would an owner be whipping a greyhound - they don't have a jockey on their back … they are natural chasers but also very gentle animals. Unfortunately the industry has changed since I was involved, prizemoney increased, on-line betting and betting advertising have all led to the small family hobby becoming a money making industry for some trainers, some who brought the industry into disrepute.

Hey Sugar Rey, Isn't it the greyhounds' natural instinct to chase a lure? Yes, the poor dogs' futures rely on the whims of some of the less favourable ...and possibly less "AUSTRALIAN" owners, but in short, the dogs actually love the thrill of the chase. I believe lots heavier penalties for the breeders/trainers out for the buck and more support for the genuine owners in it for the sport of racing.... not gambling which the government seems more interested in.

Yes, it should be banned! Greyhounds are beautiful, intelligent, elegant, gentle creatures and should not be mistreated and beaten like they are in the racing industry. Whilst I accept that most people in the industry do the right thing, there is an element in there that should never be allowed to own a dog, let alone a greyhound. I know people who own retired and reprogrammed greyhounds and not one of them does not adore their dog, and says it is the best thing they did by rescuing the dog. These dogs should not have been "programmed" in the first place to chase down prey, and live happily in their new homes with babies, other dogs and cats, and are gentle giants. I have one friend who has a young baby, and the dog sleeps next to the crib. If the baby so much as whimpers the greyhound will come and get my friend by the wrist and draw her to the baby, which is beautiful to watch. Yes, greyhound racing SHOULD BE BANNED IN ALL STATES.
