Should Firefighters Be Compensated For Severe Diagnosis Linked To Smoke-Inhalation?

Australian firefighters are in battle over compensation as experts link cancers to bushfire smoke. A firefighter has, after years of service fighting fires, been diagnosed with three cancers that his specialists say are all linked to the bushfire-smoke inhalation. And because of this, the volunteer firefighter has taken up arms against the NSW government on not one, but two fronts. The first is over an anomaly in the state’s workers compensation laws that mean emergency service workers get smaller payouts than other employees. The second is over delays to safety reforms for volunteers recommended following the disastrous 2020 Black Summer bushfires. What do you think LiveTribers? Should firefighters be compensated for severe diagnosis linked to smoke-inhalation?

Absolutely, these people are amazing what they do, and I rate them well above, police, and doctors and nurses, and I don't think they get paid enough money. They risk their lives to save others, and risk getting seriously injured and death. They deserve much more. They don't get the pats on the back that other emergency services personal get.

All volunteers should be able to claim appropriate compensation if injured as a direct result of their volunteering. Emergency service volunteers more so than any others. Without volunteers many services would not exist or if they did, the service would be seriously limited.

Yes without a doubt, they risk their life to saves ours, it's much more valuable to compensate for them instead of overpaying for certain careers like celebrities

Absolutely. Far better to have monies spent on these invaluable members of the community who suffer as a result of their selfless efforts than have millions squandered on political pork barrelling.

Too often our front line workers whether firefighters, police, military, health workers etc. are not treated as they should be. I think if any have health issues related to their jobs then yes the government should pick up the bill and they should be treated to the best treatments.

All emergency services have difficult to keep occupationally safe work places. Despite the known risks any employment linked serious disease should be considered compensatable by Courts. All efforts should be made to keep all workplaces as risk controllable as can be done sensibly.

Rural firefighters often go long stretches without many breaks and often volunteer to put life and limb on the line to save people's homes and properties during major bush fires. They are a vital resource when times and the season get tough. So yes they need compensation and recognition and ways to recover on activated compensation procedures.

Yes, I think they should this is just one off the hazards firefighters face when fighting not only bushfires but also house fires, the one difference being they mask up in a house fire but the equipment they use is not as good as it should be. From memory I think volunteer fire fighters too are facing similar challenges, they don't get paid to fight these bush fires so they to would need to be compensated.
