Is An App Called “Drone Shark” helping To Keep Sydney Surfers Safe In The Water?


Jason Iggleden, the creator of an app called Drone Shark, talks to Guardian Australia about why he decided to start simultaneously filming surfers on Sydney’s eastern beaches while monitoring for sharks. The app, which was designed for surfers who want footage of themselves catching waves, is a ‘first in the world’. It also reports on surf spots and conditions and provides drone footage of predators lurking off the beach. What do you think LiveTribers?     Another tool in trying to keep people safe. Has to be manned properly though or some alarm comes through immediately something is sighted. Seeing whales and dolphins and turtles etc. in the shark nets is horrible so something must be used in their place.

    Image recognition and artificial intelligence are being combined so drone footage so lifesavers can be alerted and check images and alert swimmers quickly to get out of the area. University of Technology Sydney (UTS) has tech researchers are doing this. Nets to be removed from patrolled beaches - so a win for wildlife while still protecting swimmers. Sounds good to me.

    I think it is a great idea. I love the beach but I am very 'hyper' about sharks even though I know you are more likely to get struck by lightning than being bitten by a shark. I know nothing about drones but I assume when a shark is spotted it somehow alerts the surf club who then hit the siren. That is the point when I literally 'walk on water' to get to the beach!! I agree that shark nets are cruel and also kill other species of marine life.
