How Fat Is Australia?

Australia is often seen as the land of sun and surf so it is fair to assume that people assume all Aussies must be fit and healthy. But that’s not true. Statistics show that 67% of Australian adults and 24% of kids are either overweight or obese and we are getting fatter. LiveTribers, do you think Australia is a fat country? Have you noticed widening waistlines? What or who do you think is to blame?

I'm not a big people-watcher. I wonder if we ever were so thin in times of relative prosperity? In the great Depression & maybe during wars & bank collapses, etc we were quite thin, yes, but in prosperous times you will find plenty of examples of many larger Aussies. As to the solutions, I'd say diet & exercise are only part of the solution and may only work to a point & in some people, not much at all. What most people don't realize is how much the chemicals, hormones & antibiotics in foods cause fattening. Even fresh fruit & veg, unless certified organic, is very toxic long term and the body's unable to get rid of this stuff which causes people to pile on the layers. Our water quality is terrible & needs Reverse Osmosis filtering before it's safe to use. Our air is heavily polluted, mostly from Chem Trails as we hardly have any polluting industries anymore.

Think our current population sit too long, eat the wrong snack foods and drink too much fizzy sugary soft drink to be the tall Aussie surf lifesavers of yore. The worst part about noticing the widening waistlines is that is on our younger people, those still attending school. Their future doesn't look too healthy to me.

Yeah, i saw many people who are suffering from obesity. But i think obesity comes from their laziness and bad food habbits.

I think there are people that keep their healthy, fit regime going and from talking to people, there is alot of over weight people who are thinking twice about their size and doing something about it

Fats a fact in Oz just as in the UK and USA and Canada. Caused by our following the American Fast food fad since the 1950s. Total trans fat and saturated fats and some forms of sugar and fructose should be heavily taxed .Most people don't have the self discipline or knowledge to eat well and most of Oz does bugger all regular exercise......no wonder we are getting sicker and fatter. The only people that really benefit are doctors, surgeons and undertakers......and the big fast food corporations!!!

I am ashamed when I see people with 2.5 meter waistlines. I will never be overweight and have not in the past 74 years.

Restaurants/cafes must stop upsizing meals and drinks. I’ve read takeaway coffee cups started selling a Latge cup as their medium size to charge more money. We’re so busy at work with a short break to consume whatever available at the food court. Speed/convenience over the quality/health tend to win. Who will argue about they’re getting too much food? To deliver a quick solution to satisfy consumer’s needs, apparel brands label their dress size standards fatter than it used to be 20 years ago because fat people complain their clothe is too small instead of go on a diet and service providers get a negative reviews that damage their business. We are all responsible for gaining weight.

We do not have to eat large meals 1/2 could be put in the fridge for later! We are one of the most obese people in the world. People do have mirrors.

we never had IPad's etc back then, we used to go bike riding and play outdoors I think 80% more than today, kids and adults snack more and buy take out foods which cost 3 times more than home cooking.
