Australian Indigenous basketball star Liz Cambage has confirmed she will
compete for the Opals in the Tokyo Olympics after she threatened to quit the
team amidst claims over "whitewashed" promotional team photos. Last
week, Cambage posted the following message on her instagram account: “If
I’ve said it once I’ve said it a million times, how am I meant to
represent a country that doesn’t even represent me. Australia, wake the
f*** up. I’m not playing these games no more, I’m not. It’s
sad, the whitewashing is sad.
Your black athletes lead you everywhere. Indigenous athletes are some of the
best athletes we have. An y’all don’t use them at all.” NBA
title winner Andrew Bogut has criticised Liz Cambage’s
‘whitewashing’ argument saying: “Some of our most prominent
people of colour, that play for Australia, Patty Mills and Ben Simmons,
they’re playing in the best league in the world right now, they
can’t even come to that photo shoot. I don’t think Cambage can,
she’s probably overseas. There’s a lot of different factors that go
into it, this is made out like it was a blatant effort to whitewash the photo,
to make Australia look white. C’mon. Not in today’s day and age,
you’d be an idiot if you’re running the AOC to do that, because
you’re going to get blow ups.” What do you think LiveTribers? Do you
agree with Cambage or with Bogut?

Neither anymore, just get on and play stop the issue!!
There are ways to include players who can’t attend the shoot. The
non-representative promotional shot may not have been deliberate but it was
certainly thoughtless. People have to try harder to be inclusive. They need to
think about all angles when they make their decisions. They just need to think
from other points of view. Get it right!
Why is there even an argument over the photo, she may not have been available.
However, I will disagree with her comments on whitewash, there are indigenous
players in every other major sport in Australia who receive recognition all the
Why does it have to be argumentative and for us to decide who we agree with?
They’re both right in their own points of view and although they’re
different, they portray the same values. Yes these things should be bought to
attention if someone feels shamed or undervalued but at the same time if
everything is about race or skin colour and who’s wrong and right about it
then how do we move forward. Editing the photo to include herself and then
posting it would have been a very stirring and stronger answer if a photo is
taken and used for campaigning then the action becomes past tense because
what’s done is done, the way for true change is to be the change and spread
awareness not spread hate or start “riots” on social media or any media.
What is wrong with people? Why are we trying to politicize sport. The best
player is the best player, no matter the colour of their skin. If you want YOUR
team to win, then you pick the BEST players to do that, even if they might be
green with antennas coming out of their heads. We all play to win, but if we
can't, then let's have fun trying, otherwise forget it.
Liz Cambage is NOT an Indigenous Australian!!!
She is not a great role model for the way she speaks and if she doesn't want to
play for Australia I'm sure there are many newcomers who would be grateful and
happy to take her place!
I am oretty sure that in sport where someone represents particular discipline
and country he/she competing for shouldnt be doubts about skin colour! Sports
spirit is the main factor which should prevail
Perhaps Cambage was just trying to get attention. She might have been having a
bad day when she made the comment. I notice she later relented to say she would
play. Bogut made some good suggestions. Obviously not everyone is available
for the photoshoot when it happens, as they are overseas, etc. I think it was
just a storm in a teacup and the media tried to make a big thing out of it.
I think they both have rights to voice their opinions and how they feel and what
they think. It is up to the individual person to form their own opinion and what
they think. Freedom of speech I kind of can see right in both
I agree with Andrew Bogut & to expand on Liz Cambage's remarks I think she is
the racist . I notice you name her as indigenous Australian , which she is not ,
so please base your Live Tribe remarks on truth .
Her father is Nigerian and her mother is a white Australian, and Liz was born in
London. She carries two passports. Why does this question label her Indigenous?
I saw athletes with prosthetics, an indigenous footy player, and some white
I agree with Bogut.
Calling the race card is not helping anyone in any situation. A Nigerian mixed
race person is not "indigenous". The best person should be chosen for whatever
the job is, not just filling a quota of skin colours or disabilities; who knows
what the circumstances were for the photo shoot. Availability? Covid had closed
borders? Pul your head in, Liz.
She was born in England and moved to Australia as a baby when her parents
separated. Born to a Nigerian father and anglo Australian mother she is not
representative of our Indigenous people. I think she made a wrong call in this
matter. She has played for overseas teams since 2011 and enjoyed very high
salaries and lifestyle. I am not sure why she is complaining about how she is
being treated as I think she has a lifestyle many would envy.
I do not think different nationalities are being under represented these days.
Check out the TV ads and shows, actors, sports, models, musicians, etc. I think
calling the race card is not helping anyone and can only cause harm. Common
sense and respect by all is what is necessary to bring about a true acceptance
of all colours - white and other.
Crazy thing about all this . Japanese people have voted 80% against staging the
Olympics . It really shows how much Governments care about what their people
think . It's all about the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ .
Why is she described as "Australian Indigenous"?
She was born in Britain. Her father was Nigerian and her mother was Australian.
According to https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2791044-unapologetically-liz
"She was raised there by two white women: her mother, Julia, and grandmother,
So - by what stretch of the imagination is she "Australian Indigenous"?
We will never get anywhere with wiping out racism for as long as there are
people who turn the race card when it suits them - that is, to gain some
advantage or publicity. Everyone must be treated equally. That means equally -
not equally except where a minority gets some advantage on whatever excuse. It
means no token minority presence in advertising, nor in photo-shoots.
So - Bogut, not bogus.
Andrew Bogut as a point . It wasn't a washout of indigenous Olympians for the
photo but Liz Cambage is over reacting. We have world recognised indigenous
Olympians and we know it. Some people are too precious. BT
Media ambulance chasing storm in a teacup....Cambage probably had a bad
day.....who really cares. Both are overpaid and rated ,talented sportspeople far
removed from real life! But are entitled to an opinion even if it's wide of the
Another self entitled brat who couldn't get her own way. This is what happens
when they start believing their own publicity, they think they are more
important than anyone else. They should tell her that she's not wanted anymore
and to STFU
