Are Anti-Vaxxers Guilty of Child Neglect?

Armed police officers stormed into a house in the US state of Arizona after a doctor notified child welfare services that children in the house were sick and unvaccinated. The child’s parents refused to take their child to the hospital and the doctor feared the child might be suffering from meningitis and called the authorities. The parents refused to let the police in and so the door was broken down and three children were removed. Is this an overreaction? Are anti-vaxxers guilty of neglect? What are your thoughts LiveTribers?

I think in this case, with suspected meningitis, which is not only deadly but horrendously painful, they had to take the children, as the parents weren't taking proper care (a child should be in a hospital, with such a condition, getting care and treatment). Neglect of medical attention when a child is ill, is neglect, whatever the vaccination stance. I do think it is neglectful of their own child and other community members health especially babies too young for immunisation and others with conditions limiting their ability to withstand illnesses and to have immunisations for genuine reasons. My friends baby got whooping cough, he caught it before he could be immunised and nearly died twice, having to be hospitalised, rushed by ambulance and getting mild brain damage due to oxygen deprivation. All of this could be prevented by those around him being immunised. It is so sad that in such a wealthy country people chose to ignore the benefits, and can spread diseases they carry to anyone and everyone as they travel the world and mix with people on chemo, babies, elderly, people without money for medical care, etc, etc... we can and should be doing better.

Anti-Vaxxers are very odd people indeed. My mother is an Anti-Vaxxer despite the fact that the flu killed my father. Anti-vaxxers feel they are superior and know better than the professionals. I wouldn't call it child neglect though because in their minds they know better. I have heard it said "they are just little diseases children get" but as the rest of us know there is nothing "little" about them and they can be killers. I think it has to be about information, persuasion and education rather than brute force. People tend to get their backs up when pushed. No-one will ever be able to convince my mother there is no link between injections and Autism, she also believes if you have anesthetic for an operation you will have a stroke and die. I have no idea where she got these ideas but she spreads them around making her a dangerous person. Needless to say I am of the opposite opinion.

Anti-vaxxers are irresponsible and don't realise what their choses can do to other people or they just don't care. When my child was a lot younger going to primary school he contracted whooping cough even though he was vaccinated. I had the the Department of Infectious Deseases ring me about this and I was so angry I asked them why did he get this because he was vaccinated and they said that because a lot of parents refuse to get their children vaccinated the vaccine will only stop them from dying not contracting the disease. This is one of the most frightening things I have had to see, fortunately because my son was older and he had been vaccinated he was able to fight the disease, but it was still the most terrifying thing I have had to go thorough and I have had to fight bowel cancer. These people who think that these vaccinations cause problems with their children you watch a child go through whooping cough and see how you feel then.

Anti-vaxxers not only don't care about their family, they have a blatant disregard for the community they live in. Most diseases such as meningococcal are stamped out by herd immunisation. It only takes one in the community to put the whole community at risk. These idiots are the first ones to squeal if their child died - it is every one else fault and particularly the health professionals. Not theirs - well sunshines - it is absolutely YOUR fault for believing in pseudo science and not the real science based on evidence. And for the record, the earth is actually sort of spherical not flat!! No Vaxx - no medicare benefits or access to the public purse.

Exactly. Polio is also on the way out or would be if they were allowed to continue to administer the Oral Sabin. Unfortunately, certain countries and people actually kill the administers of these life saving vaccines under some misguided ideology.

That depends on what your beliefs are. Trying to scare people in vaccination is a poor substitute for being able to prove a point of view. If they could, they would have, but, as can be seen, by the scare campaign, they cannot.

This issue has been ongoing in Australia too.I think it should be manditory for children to get vaccinated against diseases. All my four children were vaccinated and had no ill effect.Maybe just cried for a bit but that was all.My 4 year old grand daughter recently was in hospital with severe headaches and had all of the tests for meningitis and that was one of the first things the doctor asked. Were here vaccinations up to date and my daughter 100% replied that they were.thankfully Sophia didnt have meningitis and is now on the mend.It was a very scary thing though and if people that dont get their children vaccinated went through this they would probably feel bad not vaccinating them

Not so much neglect but a blatant disregard for the lives of the kids involved and the people around them. I believe that if you choose to live within a society, you must abide by the majority rule and in this case, that would be to have the kids vaccinated. The risk of an epidemic is too great to allow a couple of kids to not be vaccinated. On the other side of the coin, society shouldn't be allowed to impose the majority rule on those who don't want it. If you don't want to vaccinate, don't expect to be included in public life and don't expect the majority to understand why you are putting the lives of your children at risk because of something that is almost certain not to happen. Reactions to the vaccinations are very rare. Go live in the country away from others so you don't make anyone else sick if you must risk the lives of your children. It's a fine line between freedom of choice for adults and children.

Many parents scared off vaccination by a lot of disinformation on the web unfortunately so it should be classified as a case of ignorance which could have tragic consequences. Need better authenticated, high quality, trust worthy information outlets with live chats for parents and persons wanting to know more about the vaccination issues & consequences. Seems like pack inserts are insufficient to allay fears. After all, why aren't the same anti vaxxers complaining about the toxic ingredients in foods they ingest daily which may also be capable of causing anaphylaxis and brain damage?

Unfortunately children and adults that are not vaccinated do get there horrible diseases and then spread it amongst other children and adults and in some cases cause maiming and or death. I personally would not like that on my conscience when these diseases are preventable and were very much controlled until anti vaxers. I have seen children with Polio and measles and children born deformed because their mothers contracted the disease during pregnancy. It's fine for them to say it is their choice but they are being irresponsible. Yes they are their kids and if they lived away from the population I would have no problem with their choice but not when they are mixing with others.

Absolutely! Unless yr child has a health risk associated with vaccinations there is no valid reason not to protect your child by getting them done. We have almost eliminated childhood diseases by vaccinating & anti-vaxxers are putting everyone else at risk of returning to the days where children & the elderly would die or become seriously ill with them. Yes the elderly can be affected because their immune systems are weakened with age & it means they are just as vulnerable as children. It is very rare that a child has a serious adverse reaction & it certainly does not cause Autism, they are quite safe these days with the worst reaction is a sore leg at the site & a slight temperature afterwards. Anti vaxxers thrive by sharing misinformation & people blindly believe instead of researching & educating themselves on the truth.

So you think it is OK for them to put their children and others in harms way? It is like standing them in the middle of a highway and hoping the cars miss them. Since the Oral Sabin by 2000 The Western Pacific Region is Polio free. Once many died or were crippled and I am of the age when I went to school with kids in callipers and had neighbours in them also. The numbers are horrific of those who contracted this disease. It is also an ongoing problem with various disabilities presenting themselves as these people who had contracted Polio age. A lot of the fear campaign is just not based on fact but what one particular so called expert views and a number of so called experts with few or no credentials. Hundreds of thousands of people died or were crippled yearly worldwide. The immunisation has now restricted outbreaks to 3 countries. Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan although there was an outbreak in Papua New Guinea last year. Look up photos of the afflicted children and their crippled bodies. It is heartbreaking.

There is so much missing content of information that a healthy and vital response is difficult. This, if true and credible, is a story that is highly unlikely. It is far to drastic a measure. I would need a lot more information to know what was behind this incident. This has nothing to do with immunisation. The Doctor would have other knowledge what was in disorder with the people in the household. Police do not cause such destruction for as such an event. A large number of residents are unaware of the benefits and pitfalls of immunisation, what Doctors and Police are responsible for and their roles in the community.

We have an outbreak of measles in Australia now all due to anti vaxers. I understand their views in part but if they see the misery and deaths of children and adults caused before these vaccinations became available and even see in countries that do not vaccinate they would have to change their views. Anti vaxers have been known to once they or their children have been afflicted and or died from polio, chicken pox, measles, whooping cough, etc. As for this story from USA I think I would need more information. Perhaps the parents had a history of child neglect or the child was in extreme danger as were other children in the house.

Unfortunately a parent who refuses vaccination for their child is exposing other children to viruses, not just their own. If their unimmunised child catches the disease, they can spread it to other children who are unvaccinated, and to infants too young to be vaccinated yet. I personally think it is neglect, but some people have been convinced by the paleo-dieters and other nuts that vaccination is dangerous. There can be side effects, occasionally devastating ones, but the percentage is much smaller than the percentage of deaths and disablement from the diseases. I grew up when there was lots of poliomyelitis around, and no vaccine against it. It was scary, and families whose children got the disease were treated like criminals. Even if a child was cured, which happened occasionally, no other kids were allowed to play with them or sit near them in school. But most of the infected kids ended up crippled or dead.

It makes me sick to think anyone could do this to children let alone your own children wake up you stupid people if we didn't have vaccines there would still be diseases such as the bleach plague and the likes just wake the f... up I'm disgusted with these absolute idiot's all my children are vaccinated and I certainly am glad they are please people wake up.

The big problem is that vaccines are artificial immune enhancers. Natural immunity strengthens the body AND the species. Unfortunately the strong survive the weak perish. The risk in a few generations is something innocuous now COULD decimate the planet OR WORSE.

In this case, the Police may have been bit over reactive, but the chldren always come first and I believe the doctor did the right thing under his duty of care. considering what we have seen with outbreaks of measles and the meningococal instances - anti vaxxers need to take a good look around the world and stop thinking it won't happen to them. Vaccination appears to be a choice, but I do not believe it should be. When I was a child vaccinations and boosters were mandatory. All of my biological and foster children were vaccinated form birth until teens. All of my grandchildren, godchildren nieces and nephews are vaccinated, and ongoing for new born family members. There is no way, as a senior, I would not have vaccinations myself to protect anyone's babies.

The way that statement was worded it sounds very incriminating to antivaxxers which shows bias. I think you should have the right to choose for your child. My child is fine with vaccination but i've known other children who show extreme side effects. I think everyone should have the right to choose. But if you're child is sick and your denying them medicine that could be neglectful.

Kerry, Did you know Amish people don't ever have children with autism until they are forced to vaccinate them. Most vaccines have mercury in them, animal blood, aluminum which causes damage to the brain, etc but the worst one is aborted baby tissue. Check out the NaturalNews.com website and there you will be able to get a rundown on what goes into them.
