What Are Protesters Saying?

5G towers might look like an alien beacon but simply put they make internet faster, more efficient and lowers latency. It means businesses, games and all-around internet lovers will be able to stream, download and connect faster than before. But why are some people freaking out about 5G towers popping up in their neighbourhood? Well, there are some privacy concerns associated with the new technology. If you want to enjoy the new tech you’ll have to have a smartphone compatible with 5G and there are concerns police might use 5G to track suspects. There are also conspiracy theorists that believe the radiation emitted by these towers could be potentially harmful for humans. This is mainly because in one Belgian city the development of a tower was halted due to exposure concerns. Depending on how deeply you dive into these theories the 5G towers have been even blamed for spreading COVID-19.

Fast Facts:

–      5G will be around 20 times faster than 4G

–      Fears surrounding radiation can be traced back as far as 1903. Back then it was dubbed “radiophobia”

–      At the moment 5G is currently being used in South Korea, China and the United States with other countries like Australia starting to roll out their network in 2019.

–      Shockingly a survey conducted by Essential found that 1 in 8 people believed 5G towers are directly responsible for COVID-19

Somewhat unsurprisingly the epicentre of the 5G debate is the Northern NSW’s town of Mullumbimby (also dubbed the anti-vaccine capital of Australia). The community there have successfully stopped a Telstra tower updating to 5G for over a year and they are proud of it. According to one 5G activist it can cause cancer and impact your immune system, however, Australia’s Chief Medical Officer Professor has said “There is no evidence telecommunication technologies, such as 5G, cause adverse health impacts.”

What do you think LiveTribers, how do you feel about 5G towers popping up?
