The Premiers Fall
The Cronulla Sharks – defending premiers got trampled by the ever competition Brisbane Broncos. The Melbourne Storm, after a heart breaking defeat in the decider last year looked to have shrugged off any disappointment with hard fort victory against the Canterbury Bulldogs. The Tigers, made up for an indifferent 2016 and comfortably accounted for the injury ravaged South Sydney Rabbitohs. The St George Illawarra Dragons were breathing fire Saturday afternoon at Jubilee Stadium, embarrassing the much more fancied men from the foot of the mountain – Penrith Panthers. Thurston’s field goal attempt sunk the Canberra Raiders in extra time, a victory that is bound to give the North Queensland Cowboys some confidence going into next round.

Knight’s Pain Continues
The Sydney Roosters were crowing after putting a disappointing 2016 behind them, surviving a late comeback from the star studded Gold Coast Titans. Just when you thought the Newcastle Knights were about the snap that losing streak the New Zealand Warriors clicked back into gear showing what they are capable of in 2017. Round 1 ended with Parramatta Eels too good for an under-strength Manly Sea Eagles.
